‘Flapjax’ Teaser Serves Up Slimy, Grotesque Fast-Food Horror Ahead of Fantastic Fest

A deadly new menu item is coming to Fantastic Fest, where Flapjax will celebrate its World Premiere on September 17 at 11:30 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas.

The teaser for Rocko Zevenbergen’s horror-comedy looks like a throwback to the gooey, splatter-soaked body horror that used to lurk on video store shelves. I’m getting Street Trash, Society, and The Stuff vibes, with a little Basket Case thrown in for good measure. That whole strain of grotesque horror-comedy where rubbery creature effects, bodily fluids, and bad taste are half the attraction. There’s a scrappy, Troma-adjacent energy to it, too. Slimy, sticky, deeply weird midnight-movie fun.

In the film, an annoyingly optimistic but endearingly earnest fast-food manager is tasked with relaunching a long-dormant product called Flapjax. No amount of mysterious warnings or disappearances will get in his way, even as he unknowingly carries out an alien race’s plans by serving the deadly menu item.

The filmmakers cite Yasujirō Ozu and David Cronenberg as influences, which is a pretty wild combination for a movie about alien fast food.

Zevenbergen wrote the screenplay with Estevan Muñoz, who also stars alongside Gabriel Cagan, Georgia Kate Haege, Madeline Barbush, Kaoru Koide, Takumi Mitobe, and Daniel Berkey.
