EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s Cannes Film Festival winner La Bola Negra will begin its platform release on Oct. 16 with the Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo directed title booked at AMC Century City and AMC Burbank in Los Angeles, and at the Angelika Film Center (35mm) and The Paris Theater (35mm) in New York.

A bold tapestry spanning nearly a century of Spanish history, La Bola Negra tells the story of three generations of men whose lives are intimately connected through desire, pain, and love.

The film will continue to expand in its second and third week in the top DMAs in the U.S. and Canada before expanding wider across the country on November 6 (running list of markets below).

The other 35mm locations where the pic will screen include TIFF Lightbox Toronto, Alamo Drafthouse Brooklyn, Landmark Nuart Los Angeles, Music Box Chicago, Coolidge Corner Boston, Angelika Film Center Dallas, Rialto El Cerrito, Hollywood Theatre Portland, The Tara Atlanta, the Sun-Ray Tampa, The Tower Sacramento and VIFF Vancity Vancouver.

Calvo and Ambrossi (aka the Javi’s), along with members of the cast, will participate in select in-theater Q&As in both Los Angeles and New York. Ambrossi and Calvo won the Best Director Award at Cannes back in May. The film most recently held its North American premiere at the Telluride Film Festival to a rapturous reception. It will screen next at TIFF.

As previously reported, Netflix will be reporting grosses for La Bola Negra, David Fincher’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, Peter Berg’s Mosquito Bowl, Danny Boyle’s Ink, Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew and animated title Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The hope here for La Bola Negra is to pop a solid per theater average during its run. Netflix’s first No. 1 ranking film at the domestic weekend box office was late August 2025’s Kpop Demon Hunters Singalong with an estimated $19M.
