Blizzard opened BlizzCon 2026 on Saturday by confirming something the internet has been chasing for the better part of a decade. A Diablo animated series is in development at Netflix.
Blizzard president Johanna Faries made the announcement from the stage in Anaheim. “We are thrilled to share that we are in development on a new animated series for Diablo with Netflix,” she said, per Kotaku. That is the whole of it. No animation studio, no showrunner, no cast, no window. Blizzard says more details are coming.
Talk of a Netflix Diablo series has circulated since 2018 without either company ever confirming it, which is why the sentence matters more than the detail attached to it. A rumor that survives eight years is still a rumor. A company president saying it into a microphone is a development deal.

Sanctuary Was Always a Horror Setting
Diablo turns thirty this year, and the first one was a horror game before the genre it launched swallowed it. The 1996 original sent a single figure down sixteen floors beneath the cathedral at Tristram, into catacombs and caves and finally Hell itself, and the thing most people still remember is the Butcher — a boss who waits behind a door in a room strung with the bodies of the men sent in ahead of you, and who greets the player with two words that have followed the franchise ever since.
That is the register an animated series would have to hit. Netflix already found out what happens when a video game adaptation respects its source material and what happens when it does not, and Diablo has thirty years of demonology, corrupted angels and ruined churches to work with.
‘Diablo V’ Arrives in 2029 With the Demons Already Winning
The larger reveal of the morning was Diablo V, dated for spring 2029. Blizzard’s own recap describes a world in which “Diablo has triumphed and its heroes have been defeated,” which is a considerably bleaker place to start a game than any of the four before it. Players take the role of the Heir to Westmarch and move with caravans of survivors through what is left.
Three classes were shown. The Demon Hunter and the Monk return from Diablo III. The new one is the Plague Knight, which senior game director Joe Shely described at BlizzCon as “a heavily armored class, walking death. You’re going to be roaming the battlefields spreading disease and then consuming it for power.” A class built out of disease and rot is the most explicitly horror-facing thing the series has put in a player’s hands in years.

What Else Came Out of Anaheim
The Amazon joins Diablo IV in the first half of 2027, built around four archetypes — Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander — and bringing javelins and bows with her. Season of Hell’s Legacy, a thirtieth-anniversary season pulling in characters and locations from across the franchise, starts September 15. The same day, the Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 with both expansions attached.
The animated series is the only item on that list with nothing else attached to it, and no-details announcements are historically where adaptations go to sit for a few years. Still, Netflix has been spending on horror lately, and Diablo hands it thirty years of the stuff to draw from. The rest of what the service is running this month is already on the schedule.
