Shudder has released the official poster for Hallowarrior, the post-apocalyptic Halloween thriller that hands Hereditary breakout Milly Shapiro the lead. Written and directed by Ben Sottak, the film premieres on the streamer Friday, October 16, which puts the poster right on schedule for spooky season.
Shapiro plays Pumpkin, the sole survivor of a plague that finished off humanity, who scavenges the wasteland for supplies on the eve of her favorite holiday. Her solo celebration is interrupted by a gang of raiders led by Thalia, played by Shannyn Sossamon. Outnumbered and armed with candy, wit and whatever weapons she can find, Pumpkin has to fight through the night.
Ajani Russell and AJ Bowen round out the cast. The film premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 10 in its Escape section, and Shudder picked it up ahead of that screening. It is Sottak’s first feature after a run of shorts that played Tribeca, Fantasia and FrightFest.
Where You Know the Cast From
Shapiro is still best known for one of the most unsettling child performances of the last decade, as Charlie in Ari Aster’s Hereditary. According to Rue Morgue, Hallowarrior is her first feature since that film. In between she turned up in Peacock’s Satanic Panic series Hysteria!, which iHorror covered when it landed in 2024. Going from the kid who made a tongue click terrifying to a candy-armed final girl is a career arc horror fans will want to see play out.
Sossamon is genre royalty of a quieter kind. She led Ciaran Foy’s Sinister 2, spent two seasons in Wayward Pines, and headlined the J-horror remake One Missed Call back when American studios were remaking everything with a ghost in it. She also executive produces here, so her villain turn as Thalia comes with some ownership. Bowen is the Adam Wingard repertory player from You’re Next, The Guest and A Horrible Way to Die, and one of the Vice reporters who walk into the commune in Ti West’s The Sacrament. Russell broke out in HBO’s Betty and Crystal Moselle’s Skate Kitchen.
A Throwback With Candy for Ammunition
Sottak has been clear about the register he is going for. “This is a throwback to the crowd-pleasing genre films I grew up watching every Halloween,” the writer-director said when the release date was announced. “The movie is dripping with nostalgic fall atmosphere, cheer-inducing kills, and a lovable ‘final girl’ played by the brilliant Milly Shapiro.” When the Shudder deal closed, he called the film “a love letter to horror and Halloween.”
The early word out of Tribeca backs that up. Dread Central’s Ashliene McMenamy called it “equal parts coming-of-age story, post-apocalyptic thriller, and home invasion film” and described a world “so spooky and nostalgic that I wasn’t ready to leave when the lights came up.” The film runs a brisk 80 minutes and is set at an upstate New York farmhouse, which is to say it is a siege movie with a jack-o’-lantern on the porch. That is a smart shape for a debut: one location, one long night, and a lead the camera can stay on.
Sottak produced alongside Emmajane Hoffman and Gabriel Rosenstein. Hallowarrior is part of Shudder’s Season of Screams slate, which stretches the streamer’s spooky season across four months this year. No trailer has been released yet. Expect one before October 16.
