Dan Stevens to Play 'Robocop' in New Prime Video Series!

Huge news this morning, as Deadline reports that Dan Stevens (pictured above in Abigail) has signed on to play the title character of RoboCop in Prime Video’s new series!

That’s right. Stevens is set to play Alex Murphy, aka Robocop, a justice-dealing cyborg.

The series will be eight episodes and has been in development since Amazon acquired MGM in 2022.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“A giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.”

Peter Ocko will write, showrun, and executive produce the series.

Executive producers include James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Blumhouse Atomic Monster, Ed Neumeier, co-creator and co-writer of the original Robocop film, and Danielle Bozzone of Blumhouse Atomic Monster, who will co-executive produce and oversee the project for the company. Amazon MGM Studios will produce.

Released in 1987 by brilliant filmmaker Paul Verhoeven, Robocop remains one of my all-time favorite action movies. Between Verhoeven’s insightful commentary on our violence-obsessed culture and Peter Weller’s pitch-perfect portrayal of a man who has turned into a machine, the film has stood the test of time and is more relevant than ever.

Sequels, TV shows, comics, video games, and a not-so-great 2014 reboot have all stomped onto the scene since. The Robocop franchise has a legion of fans, and I know I speak for all of us when I say I hope the filmmakers can recapture a bit of the magic from that first film released all those years ago. We don’t want another ED-209 here.

With Stevens in the role, I suddenly have a whole lot of confidence that won’t be the case. The man is a phenomenal actor, able to slip into just about any role and become whatever character he’s playing. The Guest, Abigail, Cuckoo, and the upcoming Onslaught…he’s a highlight of them all. I’d bet anything he nails the role of Robocop and gives us an Alex Murphy that’s both charming and quite a bit intimidating.

Dead or alive, I’m ready to go along with this series.
