Briar is getting another year at the academy. Disney has ordered a second season of Coven Academy, the New Orleans witch boarding school drama that premiered on Freeform on October 1, and Deadline reports the first season passed 20 million global hours on Disney+ and Hulu in its first three weeks. Deadline and TVLine both carried the renewal Monday.

Freeform ran the season weekly through October as part of its 31 Nights of Halloween block, while the complete run sat on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand from October 2.

Federle Has Named Three Threads for Season 2

Tim Federle, who created the series and showruns it with Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer, told TVLine that Briar will likely confront Miss Graves with “a lot of questions around why she was given away and the details around her birth.” He also said Ollie may go back to Bristol to come out as a vampire to his family, and that Tegan will stay at McKenna’s side. Federle added that he intends to be “really mindful of the tropes around queer tragedy.”

The Cast Horror Already Knows

Malina Pauli Weissman plays Briar, with Malachi Barton as Jake, Jordan Leftwich as Sasha, Ora Duplass as Tegan and Louis Thresher as Ollie, a newly turned vampire. Tiffani Thiessen runs the school as Miss Graves.

Devon Sawa guest stars as the warlock professor Mr. Cole, and Keegan Connor Tracy recurs as Tamora. Sawa was Alex Browning in Final Destination; Tracy was Kat Jennings in Final Destination 2. Two openings, two survivors, one Disney witch show.
