Four years after Netflix ordered it, The Watcher is shooting a second season. Production starts this fall in New York, with Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale back as Nora and Dean Brannock, Margo Martindale returning as neighbor Maureen and Isabel Gravitt as the Brannocks’ daughter Ellie.
Deadline reported the production start on Friday. The first season premiered October 13, 2022, and Netflix renewed it before the end of that year, which means the show has spent four years as a greenlight with nothing attached to it.
Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan created the series, and Brennan is running the second season. Netflix has not described what the new episodes are about.

A Renewal That Sat for Four Years
The pandemic and the 2023 strikes rearranged nearly every production calendar in television, and four years is long even against that. Murphy’s own output did not pause in the meantime. Monster and American Horror Story both kept moving, and so did his leads.
That is the quiet cost of the Murphy model. A renewal from him is real, and it is also one line in a slate deep enough that a show can wait half a decade for its turn without ever being cancelled.

The Real House Is Still a Mystery
The first season drew on what happened at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, where the Broaddus family began receiving anonymous letters from someone calling themselves the Watcher after buying the house in 2014. Nobody has ever been publicly identified as the author, and the case has never produced a charge. We went through what the show kept and what it invented when the first season landed.
That unsolved ending is the thing a second season has to reckon with. The first one closed on ambiguity because the real story never closed at all, and going back in means either inventing an answer or finding a new reason to keep the question open.
The Rest of the Cast Is an Open Question
Four returning names is a thin list for a show that ran on its supporting bench. Jennifer Coolidge, Mia Farrow, Richard Kind, Noma Dumezweni and Joe Mantello were all in the first season, and none of them has been announced for the second. Netflix has given no episode count and no premiere window, and the first season is still on Netflix in the meantime.

For a series whose first season ended without naming its villain, a four-year silence is at least in character.
