Breaking: Zach Cregger‘s next movie, The Flood, just got even more exciting, as Variety reports that Jennifer Lawrence (pictured anove in Mother!) has joined the cast!

Lawrence is a huge get for Cregger, following the massive success of his Resident Evil take. While not generally known for her work in the genre, Lawrence has starred in horror features such as House at the End of the Street and the chaotic Mother!. Mother! especially displays her ability to express intense terror…a preview of what could be to come in The Flood. Other than that, she’s starred in a few small films like The Hunger Games, X-Men: First Class, and The Silver Linings Playbook, to name a few. Maybe you’ve heard of them?

As for The Flood, the project reunites Cregger with his Weapons producers Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment and interestingly, has him working with avowed Cregger fan Steven Spielberg. The latter’s Amblin Entertainment is also producing Flood.

While the reveal and subsequent PR release were light on detail, including keeping the plot on a distant space station, it is known that the project was originally set up at Netflix. And the filmmaker’s previous projects have been modern-set horror thriller freakouts; this one is described as being very much in the science fiction mold.

Dread learned it’s very Alien-esque, following a deep-space captain who leads her crew to investigate a cryptic signal from a distant world, only to uncover an alien artifact that warps time, reality, and their sanity, forcing them into a confrontation with an incomprehensible intelligence.

Jennifer Lawrence paired with Zach Cregger in an Alien-esque sci-fi thriller? Beam me up right now, Scotty. The Flood sounds like a winner.

Warner Bros. plans to release The Flood in theaters on August 11, 2028.
