The marketing for American Horror Story: 13 has spent months pulling familiar faces out of the vault. Now the first official teaser makes the plan impossible to miss. By the time Vogue published a wave of first-look images on August 12, the thirteenth season had stopped pretending to be subtle.
What the teaser actually reveals
The new photos confirm what the casting rumors had been circling for months. Jessica Lange is back as Constance Langdon, staring out a window in that unmistakable beehive. Sarah Paulson returns as Cordelia Goode. Evan Peters turns up as Kai Anderson, the blue-haired cult leader from Cult, and John Carroll Lynch is once again buried under Twisty the Clown’s mask. Angela Bassett reprises Marie Laveau, Mena Suvari appears as the Black Dahlia, Jamie Brewer as Addie Langdon, and Rubber Man is skulking around in the latex, because a reunion this shameless was never going to leave him home.
Peters is carrying the heaviest load. Ryan Murphy says he plays Tate Langdon, Rubber Man, and Kai across the season, and in one scene he had to act opposite himself as two of them at the same time. Murphy told Vogue the setup looked like a nightmare on paper and took Peters about two takes to crack. The man has been doing this since 2011.
Murphy’s “greatest hits” pitch
Murphy is not apologizing for the excess. He told Vogue he set out to make a “greatest hits season,” and he has pushed back on the assumption that this is a straight Coven revival, even with the New Orleans witches doing most of the early promotional work. Everybody thought Coven. Everybody was wrong.
The math is where it tips into the absurd. By his own account, Lange is reprising all four of her original roles, Peters is playing five, and Paulson is playing six. Which six is still a mystery, since Cordelia is the only one to surface so far. Lange, who spent years swearing she was finished with the show, reportedly came back on a single condition. She wanted a musical number. Murphy says he pitched her the whole season over dinner, and that he would not have made it if she had said no.
New faces and a villain he will not name
Not everyone is a rerun. Joey Pollari plays a new character named Ben, who looks like the audience’s door into a story otherwise stuffed with old monsters. Paul Anthony Kelly, fresh off Murphy’s Love Story and wearing a blond wig, plays another newcomer Murphy has singled out as the season’s linchpin. John Waters is in the mix too, which is the kind of casting that needs no further explanation.
All of these people need a reason to occupy the same story, and Murphy has supplied one. He has teased a single threat large enough to pull every villain, witch, and ghost onto the same board, and he has described it as something that outranks even the Antichrist from Apocalypse. He will not say what it is. The guessing has already started, and it has gone straight to the top of the food chain. Murphy is happy to let everyone sweat.
Why 13 does not feel like a normal AHS season
American Horror Story has crossed its own wires before. Apocalypse tied Murder House and Coven together back in 2018 and treated the collision as an event. Season 13 is running the same trick with the safety off. The show hit unlucky number 13, decided restraint had been a problem for the first twelve seasons, and tipped every monster, witch, and killer it owns onto one floor.
None of this promises the season will be good. A reunion this crowded can buckle under the weight of its own guest list, and greatest hits collections are notorious for burying the deep cuts nobody asked for. But the swing is enormous, and it is the most alive the franchise has sounded in a long time.
When does American Horror Story: 13 premiere
Season 13 premieres September 24 on FX and Hulu. It runs 13 episodes, and the schedule is front-loaded. Three episodes drop on premiere night, followed by three more on October 1, which puts nearly half the season in front of viewers inside two weeks. Whatever this ultimate evil turns out to be, it is not making anyone wait to meet it.
