Final Fantasy 14 is finally crossing over with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy sometime next year, but before the collaboration was set in stone, FF7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi was careful to not step over the MMO’s patch cadence.
Speaking to GamesRadar+ about the crossover and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, in an interview from Fan Fest Berlin, Hamaguchi reiterates that developers on the Remake trilogy were “heavily involved” in the upcoming crossover event. Not only is original Final Fantasy 7 writer Kazushige Nojima serving as a story supervisor, the rest of the team is collaborating on assets that’ll be used in an Evercold raid series.
What tends to happen when Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a collaboration in the works is that the outside team will get “really excited,” Hamaguchi says via a translator, and “come up with all these ideas” that can sometimes be quite lofty. “But at the same time we have to be really careful that it’s not impacting the FF14 patch release schedule, because then that would be putting the cart before the horse,” he adds.

To make sure things didn’t get out of hand, Hamaguchi and Final Fantasy 14’s Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida had to remind their really excited team members to “calm down” and “be reasonable, guys.” Hamaguchi remembers telling his devs to “look at our bandwidth to see what’s realistic and to make sure that they can do their best work,” in order to stop either team from getting too derailed.
Yoshi-P and Hamaguchi were still “running around and touching up everything around the sides, seeing what’s going on [and] making sure that everything’s in place.” That was on top of directing Final Fantasy 14 Evercold and Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, I should add, the mad men.
