Spider-Man Surges Way Past Saturday’s $325M Projections

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging to the top of the chart with a record-shattering debut.

2026’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to center on the title character portrayed by Tom Holland, as well as the century’s ninth live-action movie to star the superhero. It’s a direct sequel to 2021’s No Way Home, which was a runaway smash hit, partially because it united Holland’s Spider-Man with the previous versions of the character played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. That movie grossed $1.921 billion worldwide, becoming the ninth highest-grossing movie in history and the highest-grossing non-Avengers MCU movie, leaving Brand New Day with big shoes to fill.

Following in the footsteps of No Way Home may not prove to be an issue, as Sony Pictures Entertainment reports that, as of Sunday morning, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to conclude its opening weekend with a 3-day debut gross of $355 million at the domestic box office. In addition to earning the biggest debut of 2026 by a considerable margin (the previous record-holder was Toy Story 5 with $159.7 million), this total gives Brand New Day the second-biggest domestic debut of all time (behind Avengers: Endgame‘s $357.1 million).

Other records that this debut has earned include the biggest domestic opening weekend for a Sony release and the biggest domestic opening weekend for a Zendaya movie. It also earned the biggest domestic opening day of all time ($168 million), the second-biggest domestic Saturday of all time ($101.5 million), and the highest-grossing weekend for Dolby Cinema domestically ($10+ million). If it can keep up this momentum and performs similarly by the end of Sunday, it has a strong chance of surpassing Endgame‘s domestic debut record.

Brand New Day has also earned the biggest domestic debut of all nine live-action Spider-Man movies (not adjusted for inflation). The movie has surged past the domestic record set by Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned $260.1 million in 2021, which was more than $100 million higher than the debut of the previous record-holder, 2007’s Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million).

Below, see a breakdown of the domestic debuts and overall worldwide hauls of all the previous Spider-Man movies (not adjusted for inflation).

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

$92.6 million

$1.133 billion

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

$260.1 million

$1.921 billion

If the new movie is able to achieve the same trajectory as No Way Home as its run continues, it could eventually leg out to a worldwide gross of $2.4 billion, which would make it the third highest-grossing movie of all time behind Avengers: Endgame and 2009’s Avatar. While it remains to be seen if it achieves the same level of intense word-of-mouth success as its predecessor, Brand New Day‘s reception is closely comparable to the 2021 movie.

While critics’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day reviews have given it a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%, which is below No Way Home‘s 93%, audiences are giving it a boost on the aggregator website’s Popcornmeter, where the movie is one point ahead of No Way Home‘s 97% score with a Verified Hot 98%. While No Way Home has a better CinemaScore with a perfect A+, Brand New Day‘s A is nevertheless quite promising.

Additionally, Brand New Day has a distinct advantage over No Way Home. While Chinese regulators kept a tight lid on American superhero movies from 2019 through 2023 (to the point that No Way Home didn’t play in the region at all), Brand New Day is playing in China and indeed recently earned the best opening day in China for any American superhero movie since 2019. It’s expected to gross more than $250 million in China by the end of its run, giving it a huge head start.

All of this is more than enough for Spider-Man: Brand New Day to debut at No. 1 at the domestic box office, decisively ending the reign of Christopher Nolan’s smash hit The Odyssey, which debuted on July 17 and has been No. 1 for two consecutive weekends. If its run continues to break records, it could very well hold that spot for several weeks, as the next major tentpole that is in direct competition with the MCU movie is Street Fighter, which doesn’t debut until October 16.

2

4

Minions & Monsters

$5.8 million

$168.3 million (weekend 5)

5

Moana

$5.3 million

$114.8 million (weekend 4)

Overall, there has been a surprising amount of movement on the chart, despite Spider-Man slotting in neatly at the top. This is due to two factors. First, Hadestown: The Musical has fallen from No. 3 to No. 6 during its surprise second weekend (its run was extended after its debut broke Hamilton‘s record for the best opening weekend for a proshot stage show), which is not an unusual drop for a special presentation.

Meanwhile, Disney’s live-action Moana remake dropped roughly 50%, falling from No. 2 to No. 5 and buoying the previous weekend’s No. 4 and No. 5 titles – Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters – up to No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day is soaking up most of the attention this weekend, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has nevertheless made up for being knocked to No. 2 by posting the best third weekend result in history for the director (besting The Dark Knight‘s $42.6 million). Both movies are racing toward the billion-dollar milestone worldwide, though it seems likely that Brand New Day will reach that benchmark first, as its projected global debut sees it earning more than $900 million in a single weekend.
