The free games lineup for PlayStation Plus in August 2026 just got an official update, and it may be an utter disappointment for some members of the subscription service. Despite everything going on with Sony’s gaming division as of late, such as the controversy around the end of physical game discs for PlayStation, the subscription service is moving forward normally, with a few additions and a few removals every month. There are also the monthly free Essential games given out to every member.
Even so, there are a few changes coming to the service pretty soon. There had been a few talks about some of the games leaving PS Plus in August, with five games lined up for removal, but now, it seems like that number is expanding. In total, it seems like PS Plus is losing nine games on August 18, as they are set to leave the Extra and Premium catalogs, according to a report by Polygon. Some of these games are amazing, so be sure to play them before they leave.
Dead Island 2
One of the biggest hits the catalog will take in August is the departure of Dead Island 2. This is the most recent installment in the series, developed by Dambuster Studios and released by publisher Deep Silver in 2023. In this action-based survival horror game, you’ll follow six characters who try to escape a quarantine zone imposed on Los Angeles, as they face endless zombies who will try to devour them.
Even so, you’ll have a huge arsenal at your disposal, which will improve your odds of survival. Dead Island 2 joined PS Plus in October 2024, so it has technically been in the Extra and Premium catalogs for quite some time. This is your last shot to face the zombie apocalypse, either alone or in three-player co-op.
Earth Defense Force 6
Another new game slated for removal from the service’s catalog is Earth Defense Force 6. The third-person action-based shooter is chaos incarnate, and will have you controlling a recruit, tasked with defending Earth, as the title so conveniently hints at. You’ll be facing a plethora of threats, including aliens, insectoids, robots, dragons, and much more.
Of course, you’ll have the proper tools to deal with these threats. There’s a huge variety of weapons to employ as you defend Earth, from regular firearms to laser guns and even suits that let you fly. The best part is that Earth Defense Force 6 can be enjoyed with friends in online multiplayer.
Unicorn Overlord
In August, one of the most underrated RPGs on PS Plus is also leaving the catalog: Unicorn Overlord. The tactical RPG developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus in 2024 follows the story of Prince Alain, who has been exiled from his kingdom, and now musters up allies to help him face the Zenoiran Empire. What really stands out, however, is its gameplay.
With huge strategic fights on the battlefield, as well as focused battles among characters, all of which take place in real-time, players have dozens of options each time they go into combat. This is a high fantasy story focused on war, and Unicorn Overlord gets the job done correctly when portraying it. There’s still enough time to beat it if you start now.
Harold Halibut
Harold Halibut is an overlooked game on PlayStation Plus, and it’s unfortunately also leaving in August. The narrative-driven adventure follows the story of Harold, who explores a colossal spaceship that has fallen into the ocean of an alien world. Focused on character interaction and exploration, this game is a hidden gem in the catalog.
In Harold Halibut, you’ll be making connections with the other denizens of this forsaken spaceship and learning the true meaning of home, as not all are perfectly satisfied with the idea of remaining on the vessel. Harold Halibut is unique, not only in its visuals, but in its gameplay and its story, so be sure to check it out before it leaves.
Clash: Artifacts of Chaos
Added to PlayStation Plus in November 2024, Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is leaving the catalog in August. Developed by ACE Team and published by Nacom, this title is described as an action-fueled soulslike RPG. You’ll be put in control of Pseudo, a talented martial artist who will be tasked with protecting a mysterious creature, as he explores a strange world, facing even stranger enemies.
If you like challenging combat and enjoy the grace of what different styles of martial arts can provide, this RPG is the perfect game to pick up before it leaves the service. For those who are familiar with it, Clash: Artifacts of Chaos is set in the same universe as Zeno Clash and Zeno Clash 2, though it is a fully independent story.
Onee Chanbara Origin
Onee Chanbara Origin is the bundle containing the full remakes of the first two Onee Chanbara games, best known as Zombie Hunters in the Western markets. This is an action-based experience, centered around two sisters, Aya and Saki. The deal with them, however, is that they are “bound by mutual hatred and locked in a brutal fight to the death.”
Meanwhile, however, they are also fighting for survival against the Undead, who have taken over a dystopian interpretation of Tokyo. Onee Chanbara Origin is a fast-paced action-fueled hack-n-slash game with several different playable anime-style characters. If you haven’t been able to play the original games before, this remake pack is the ultimate choice.
Space Crew: Legendary Edition
If the extreme violence and intense gameplay pace of the previous game doesn’t appeal to you, know that Space Crew: Legendary Edition may be a choice – and if you want to check it out, it’s best to do so before it leaves PS Plus. This is a sci-fi strategy wargame, where you’ll be recruiting new allies, customizing spaceships, and ultimately building the strongest crew to defend Earth.
There are elements of roguelite gameplay, as you may not always be able to fulfill your mission. There’s also, admittedly, a bit of chaos, as your troops face the threats that come with dangerous missions. The Legendary Edition gives you access to special crew member options, characters who have improved abilities and stats, which will certainly help as you play through Space Crew.
Bomber Crew
From the same developers, publishers, and gameplay universe as Space Crew is Bomber Crew, leaving PS Plus in August. Replacing the sci-fi elements of the aforementioned game, Bomber Crew is a tactical simulation game that puts you in control of a bomber airplane and its crew, as you trace out strategies to have success in the war battles to come and keep your plane flying.
Who you pick will determine if your plane makes it out in one piece as you fly through enemy lines. In Bomber Crew, you also manage the airplane’s resources and features, including its fuel, ammunition, hydraulic systems, and more. As you would expect, you can also customize the airplane to your liking – but, if you fail, death is permanent, and you’ll have to start over.
Roki
Roki is one of the best games based on fairy tales, but it’s unfortunately leaving PS Plus in August. The indie game developed by Polygon Treehouse follows the story of Tove, who is set to explore a mysterious world full of secrets and monsters. This is a narrative-driven adventure game with tons of puzzles to solve and collectibles to find as the story unfolds.
In Screen Rant’s review of Roki, we gave it an 8/10 score, praising its gorgeous art direction, puzzles, and world. It’s a remarkable game, and one of the many great titles that are leaving PlayStation Plus in August, so make your pick and try to beat the chosen game before it is removed from the catalog.
