Thunderbolts* unquestionably underperformed at the box office last year, despite the fact that the movie received very positive critic and audience reviews. I think that’s a real shame, as I rewatched the movie this week and still really enjoyed it. Luckily, while Thunderbolts* may have been a box office flop, Hasbro hasn’t given up on it yet! While fans may have expected Ghost & Bucky next, Hasbro instead is launching pre-orders today for the film’s villains: the Marvel Legends Void & Valentina Allegra de Fontaine are up for order now!

I just rewatched Thunderbolts* this week in preparation for writing this article, and I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed it; probably as much or more than my original viewing. I’m genuinely quite baffled by why this film was a dud at the box office, as it feels like it has all the right ingredients to be a hit.

Hasbro released 4 of the 6 core Thunderbolts team members last year, so I think there was a bit of an expectation among Marvel Legends collectors that we’d be getting Ghost and Winter Soldier/Bucky next to complete the team. But Hasbro had other ideas and went the villainous route instead, bringing us a two-pack of an MCU Void figure and the first-ever action figure of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine!

I think the MCU version of the Void character is rather underrated as far as villains go, being a manifestation of the feelings of existential nothingness that Bob suffers from. The Void doesn’t physically manifest for long in the movie, but he is an unsettling and significant presence when he does.

The Marvel Legends Void movie figure is pretty basic, being just a 99% black figure with only paint for his shining eyes. This is accurately how he’s depicted in the movie, so I can’t complain about that, but it still makes for a dull toy. His sole accessories being a pair of swap-out splayed hands doesn’t help; I think some sort of smoke effect for Void poofing people out of existence would have added a lot here.

The other figure in this pack is the more prominent villain of the film, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. I’ve liked this character since she first appeared in the Black Widow movie, and I’m delighted we’re getting a surprise action figure of her.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a favorite of many from her high-profile role in Seinfeld, so having this figure can sort of give you an Elaine for your shelf if that’s your preference. This figure looks like the character to me, and I think she’s a solid effort.

Valentina comes with smiling and neutral heads, six total hands, a gun and w cell phone, so she’s at least more respectably geared up than the Void. I like both portraits a lot and the other accessories make sense, although I question not including a “Sentry kill switch” for her to hold.

The biggest thing going against this set is the $55.99 MSRP. It’s true that that’s the price of two standard Marvel Legends 6” figures these days, but I’m not sure this particular pair of characters will excite many collectors $56 worth. This kind of feels like a con exclusive set that was brought to mass retail for whatever reason instead. I like the pack in a vacuum, but it’s hard to see it not going on sale down the road.
