A major hero resurrection was just confirmed by Marvel, changing the game in a way that no-one saw coming. While superhero stories are infamous for bringing back dead characters at the drop of a hat, this return is a true shock that just took fans by surprise.

In Marvel’s mainstream comics, the majority of heroes have died (or been believed dead) at one time or another. However, in other media like the MCU, television shows and spin-off imprints, death tends to be a lot more permanent.

That’s why it’s shocking to see a major superhero return in the Ultimate Universe, even as so many others remain permanently gone.

Ultimate Spider-Man Is Resurrected

In today’s Ultimate Endgame #5 – from Deniz Camp, Jonas Scharf, Terry Dodson and Cory Petit – the heroes defeat the Maker. As the villain accesses cosmic power, the Ultimates triumph thanks to combined, worldwide effort, with Doctor Doom (this world’s Reed Richards) taking on the Maker at his heart.

In his final moments, Doom is able to access Maker’s power, bringing Spider-Man back to life after his death at the Maker’s hands. In Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, Marcio Menyz and Travis Lanham’s section of Ultimate Universe: Finale #1, Peter is shown returning to his civilian life, battling the Ringer in a New York free from the control of the Kingpin and the Maker’s larger regime.

Previously in Ultimate Endgame, Spider-Man was part of a strikeforce who ventured into the Maker’s time prison. Expressing himself in a body similar to the mainstream Carnage, the Maker slew Spider-Man while cruelling claiming he wasted his last years with his family for nothing.

Spidey’s death seemed permanent because the Ultimate Universe has been utterly ruthless with Marvel’s traditional heroes. Captain America was beheaded, X-Men icons Cyclops, Beast, Nightcrawler, Angel and more have been slaughtered, and Thor sacrificed himself to bring down Loki. Spider-Man dying during the final push was brutal but not unexpected.

Previous issues had even set up his seeming replacement, with his son Richard using the Ultimate version of the Venom suit to become another spider-hero. Thankfully, that was a red herring, and Spider-Man will be part of the superhero uprising who continue to improve the world after the Maker’s fall.

Ultimate Universe: Finale ends with the shock reveal that “The Ultimate Universe Will Return,” meaning Marvel plans to relaunch this imprint after an unknown hiatus. That means Ultimate Peter Parker will continue to have adventures alongside his family… perhaps far more closely than he’d like.

Ultimate Universe: Finale reveals what’s next for Spidey, as he and Mary Jane discover their daughter has been skipping school and using the Venom suit as a preteen superhero.

In Ultimate lore, the Venom suit is an advanced picotech suit run by an artificial intelligence based on Peter Parker’s consciousness. The AI is determined to protect his kids, but is a little too eager to lend them its abilities. Any continuation of Ultimate Spider-Man’s story will likely reflect on how the Venom suit is impacting his homelife, especially because the Ultimate Universe has already shown a focus on exploring Peter Parker as a husband and father.

Ultimate Endgame #5 is available now from Marvel Comics.
