Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will have fewer episodes than planned.

The live-action remake’s original episode count has been revealed before the series was forced to follow Netflix’s script mandate. Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 pulls its story from season 2 of the original animated series, titled “Book Two: Earth.” The upcoming season will see Aang, Katara, and Sokka travel across the Earth Kingdom in search of an earthbending trainer for Aang, coming across a skilled, blind bender named Toph in the process. Netflix will release all episodes of the upcoming season on June 25, 2026.

However, speaking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), executive producer Christine Boylan revealed that Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will have one less episode than season 1 due to Netflix script mandates. While the season was envisioned to have eight episodes, it was cut down to seven by the studio. Boylan’s statement seems to hint at what this episode may have been, confirming that there will be “elements” of the anthology episode “The Tales of Ba Sing Sae” in the live-action episodes to come.

Check out what Boylan had to say below:

Netflix gives very little real estate when it comes to episodes. We have seven episodes this time round, and while we wrote eight, cutting that down forced us to focus in on key themes. So while we knew we couldn’t include everything, fans can certainly expect to see elements of the fan-favourite episode ‘The Tales Of Ba Sing Se’ throughout the series.

This means season 2 of the animated show, which consists of 20 episodes, will have to be condensed into around seven hours of TV, an episode less of time than season 1 earned. This could make some story beats tighter as the show has to cut and rearrange elements and characters from The Last Airbender. Luckily, executive producer and director Jabbar Raisani confirmed that a number of important episodes will still appear in live-action, including “Zuko Alone.” He also hints at other aspects of the franchise showing up in the forthcoming episodes:

There are certain episodes we knew we couldn’t cut. Zuko Alone, for example, we knew had to be in there, and it was such an honour to be able to direct that episode too. The thing is there’s never enough time to do everything one-to-one, but we try and draw as much inspiration as possible from every aspect of Avatar: The Last Airbender, be it the comics, novels or the show, and we hope that this live-action version can drum up excitement for these other aspects of ATLA and newcomers to the series will go off and explore them.

This cutdown on episodes makes it unclear if the upcoming season will have longer episodes than season 1, or if it will simply have less time to tell its story. Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 ended in a similar way to “Book One: Water,” with Aang starting to master waterbending while accepting his role as the Avatar. It also laid the groundwork for Sozin’s Comet, which is expected to be approached differently in terms of the timeline of the live-action show.

In addition, Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 has already been filmed, which will close out the animated trilogy’s translation to a new medium. However, it’s yet to be confirmed how many episodes the final season is going to be. With season 2 having only seven episodes to tell its story, it appears Netflix wants tight control over how much time the show has. Season 2 will be arriving over two years after season 1 as well, meaning there will be fewer episodes than expected despite the lengthy wait.

However, the producers of Avatar: The Last Airbender appear not to have a say in this, meaning the episode count was dictated by Netflix, likely through the end of the season. Although it remains unconfirmed which episodes are going to correspond to those in the animated series, it does appear that the show is going to make an effort to get every important facet of the original into live-action, even if it needs to rearrange some ideas.
