Focus Feature has just shared the first ever look at Werwulf, the upcoming creature feature from Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu) that he describes as “a medieval werewolf movie,” one that’s “the darkest thing I have ever written. By far.”
The Witch star Ralph Ineson reteams with Eggers on the Focus Features horror film that also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Bodhi Rae Breathnach.
Set in 13th-century England, the film follows a community terrorized by a mysterious creature as folklore begins to manifest into reality.
“Robert Eggers’ Werewulf definitely looks like a Robert Eggers movie,” says TheInSneider. “Getting heavy The Witch vibes from this one. Felt dark and grimy… word spreading of a raving beast that has ravaged its own countryside. Stunning visuals, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson looks intense.”
TheWrap says: “The #CinemaCon trailer for Robert Eggers’ Werwulf is predictably haunting. It opens with a group of villagers dancing around a fire with intense close-ups on their faces. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp’s characters then come to town, told about a legend of werewolves in the country. A lot of images start flashing through, including brief looks at a werewolf transformation in the dark. The trailer ends with Johnson’s character in a darkened barn, mid-transformation and foaming from the mouth as he screams.”
DiscussingFilm notes that the film is presented in 4:3 aspect ratio and “follows a gothic world where townsfolk are investigating a brutal werewolf terrifying their town.”
“Eggers’ new beastie will ravage theaters,” jokes ERCBoxoffice. “DO NOT DREAD THE DARKNESS.” “THY SOUL IS CURSED.” This is the werewolf movie we all deserve. Pure Eggers.”
Production began in the UK last fall, with a release date scheduled for December 25, 2026.
Eggers reunites with several frequent collaborators following Nosferatu, while Ineson and Dafoe previously appeared in The Witch and The Lighthouse, respectively.
