Following the family-friendly adaptation of The Munsters from superfan Rob Zombie just two years ago, Universal has announced a new variation of the beloved spooky family. 1313 is reported to be a new television series adaptation from horror hero/producer James Wan (Insidious, Malignant).

According to Deadline, Wan will produce 1313 as a reboot TV series. This time, showrunner Lindsay Anderson Beer will spearhead. You may know her name from directing last year’s Pet Sematary: Bloodlines for Paramount+. She is also currently developing a film reboot of Sleepy Hollow with Paramount. You can check out our interview with her here.

While Zombie’s vision of the monstrous clan received mixed reviews from fans and critics, Dread Central found it fairly charming. Unlike the new project from Wan and Beer, Zombie’s version was tonally in sync with the original TV series that ran from 1964 to 1966. Check out our review of the movie here.

For those of you who’d like a refresher, The Munsters began as a sitcom, but it only lasted two seasons. This clan of spooks would endure, however, with the first reboot series appearing in 1988. There have also been numerous DTV movies featuring The Munsters over the years, and a pretty fantastic pilot from Bryan Fuller titled Mockingbird Lane. Check out the Dread Central’s Development Hell podcast episode all about Fuller’s unfortunately cancelled dark reimagining of the franchise.

While I’m a little surprised to see The Munsters revived so soon after the Rob Zombie outing, it shows how hungry fans are for these guys. It’s worth noting that Wan’s TV work has been excellent, most notably Netflix’s short-lived Archive 81, a mysterious and spooky treat for genre fans.

Lastly, how do you feel about 1313, the dark new reimagining from James Wan and Lindsey Anderson Beer? Are you excited for more Mockingbird Lane mayhem, or does this charming group deserve some rest?
