The Lakers have long been a family-run team.

Jerry Buss and his kids shepherded the club through 47 years and 11 NBA Championships.

Now that the Lakers are being sold to Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger, it seems at least part of that tradition will continue. ESPN NBA reporter Dave McMenamin broke the news that the Lakers have hired Iger’s son, Will, as the play-by-play announcer for its newly relocated G-League franchise, the Coachella Valley Lakers. Iger will be paired with former Laker and three-time NBA champion A.C. Green, who will do color commentary.

While the Iger scion’s family connection likely helped him get his foot in the door, he is not unqualified. He served last season as the play-by-play announcer for the San Antonio Spurs’ G-League affiliate in Austin, where he called games on Fanduel Sports Network Southwest. He also did select home games for San Antonio FC and served as a commentator in the Dallas Mavericks’ weekly studio show.

It’s a good thing he has experience, because the Coachella Valley squad’s season tips off tomorrow. Games are broadcast on Spectrum SportsNet.

Iger will be calling his first game in Coachella as the son of another media icon rejoins the G-League team: Bronny James. James was sent down from the Lakers’ big-league squad yesterday.

You can see a sample of Iger’s work below.
