Two guitars, two drum machines, two synthesizers, a farm outside Los Angeles and one day of recording. That is what Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields used to make Lost in the Night, the first Dead Man’s Bones song since their self-titled album in 2009.
ANTI- Records put the single out on Tuesday. Tim Anderson, who worked on the debut, produced it, and the track runs on drum machine patterns, post-punk guitar and synth rather than the haunted chamber pop the band built its reputation on.
The Debut Was Built on Ghost Stories
Gosling and Shields met in 2005 and found a shared fixation on the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, which turned into a plan to write love songs about ghosts and monsters. The album they made out of it was recorded with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir, the Los Angeles group founded by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea.
The Video Puts Noah Jupe and Rain Spencer in a Graveyard
The video is black and white, opens in a cemetery and follows Jupe and Spencer through a night out, cutting between the two of them. Gosling and Shields stay off camera. Keeping the movie star out of his own music video is the right decision, because it leaves the song to do the work instead of the face.
Zach Shields Is Writing the Weapons Prequel
Shields has a horror job waiting. He is co-writing Gladys, the Weapons prequel, with Zach Cregger, a pairing iHorror covered when the writers were set. Gosling has genre work of his own ahead of him as Ghost Rider, with Connor Storrie in talks to play the villain opposite him.
Lost in the Night is on streaming services now. Whether an album follows it is unclear.
