Clive Barker’s Hellraiser Ideas Are Waiting in the Wings

Clive Barker says he has a stack of Hellraiser stories sitting in note form, and that a video game is what made him want to get them moving. “I have many ideas that I’d like to see realized in the Hellraiser universe,” he told Dread Central, and he called Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival “a wake-up call to anyone who’s been involved in the making of a franchise like Hellraiser.”

He was more specific than a creator usually is about work that does not exist yet. “I have a lot of ideas that I’ve kept waiting in the wings to get going as Hellraiser films,” he said, adding that he would “love to have another go at it and explore.” He is, in his own words, “planning to keep my fingers in that pie.” The mythology is the part he keeps returning to: “I think Hellraiser is a mythology that could be given some real space to develop and expand upon myth.”

The Rights Came Back to Him in 2021

Barker’s US copyright interests in The Hellbound Heart and his original Hellraiser screenplay reverted to him in December 2021. He was blunt with Dread Central about the years before that, saying many of the Dimension-era films “were created simply to hold onto the rights” and calling the compromises involved “totally exhausting, unnecessary.”

Rome, the Inquisition, and Where His Hell Comes From

He traced the new ideas to a trip to Rome and the Vatican, its art and the history of the Inquisition. He named Black Sunday and Suspiria as influences, and noted that Lucio Fulci was a fan of Hellraiser. There are comics in the works, he said, but films are where he wants to push it.

That list is the tell. Mario Bava and Dario Argento built Catholic dread out of color and architecture rather than anatomy, and the 1987 Hellraiser works for the same reason: the Cenobites look like people who chose this, dressed for an order nobody else was invited to join. No sequel has improved on that design, and none of them has needed to.

Doug Bradley Is Still the Voice

Barker was unmoved on the casting question. “Doug is Pinhead and Pinhead is Doug,” he said, which lands differently now that Bradley has voiced the character again. Revival arrived October 8 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, built by Mad Head Games and Saber Interactive, and its sound team rebuilt the voice from Bradley’s own memory because nobody wrote the process down in the 1980s. The last Hellraiser film, David Bruckner’s 2022 reboot, cast Jamie Clayton instead.
