‘Malignant’ Reunion? Annabelle Wallis Teases James Wan Project

James Wan has something brewing for Annabelle Wallis, and she sounds ready to follow him into another movie. The question is which one.

In a new profile with The Hollywood Reporter, Wallis revealed that Wan recently reached out with a message that leaves plenty of room for speculation.

“James actually sent me a message the other day: ‘Annabelle, watch this space. I’m about to tell you something,’” Wallis said. “So, for the fans out there, who knows? He might ask me to trust him again, and I bloody will. I cannot wait to see what James brings to me.”

Could it be the long-discussed Malignant sequel? Or does Wan have some other secret role in mind? Wallis doesn’t identify a project, and her comments don’t establish that a role is officially lined up. But it’s fun to consider the possibilities.

Wallis has built a substantial part of her film career in horror. She starred in Annabelle, the first Conjuring spinoff, which Wan produced, before joining Tom Cruise in The Mummy. That movie failed to launch the planned Dark Universe of interconnected monster films, but Wallis’ relationship with Wan continued.

According to THR, it was her subsequent performance in The Loudest Voice that impressed Wan ahead of casting her in Malignant. She played Laurie Luhn opposite Russell Crowe (The Pope’s Exorcist) as Roger Ailes in the Showtime series.

Then came one of the most ridiculous third-act reveals in modern horror.

Malignant introduces Wallis as Madison, a woman experiencing visions of murders that turn out to be real. The killer, Gabriel, is her parasitic twin, whose surviving remains were surgically sealed inside her skull. He can take control of their shared body, emerging through the back of her head and sending it into a backward-moving killing spree.

Wallis is wonderful in it. The movie wasn’t a major theatrical smash, arriving simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max during Warner Bros.’ pandemic-era release experiment, but it quickly gained cult status. That crazy reveal keeps finding new audiences online. If you still haven’t seen it, you should watch it immediately.

Given that continued interest and constant viral postings, another Malignant wouldn’t surprise me. As we previously reported, Wallis acknowledged sequel conversations back in 2021, saying there were “plenty of ideas swirling around.”

But what if it’s Saw?

Wan is producing the newly announced installment for Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster, with Mike P. Nelson (Silent Night, Deadly Night, Wrong Turn) directing. There’s no reported connection between Wallis and that movie; I’m throwing it out as a possibility because it’s a real project Wan has in motion. A reunion wouldn’t necessarily mean he’s directing her again.

Or it could be something we know absolutely nothing about yet.

Personally, I think Malignant fans would scream from the rooftops if Wallis returned for a sequel. Pop the confetti, grab a beer, celebrate. She and Wan made something wonderfully outrageous together, and I’d love to see them go there again.

For now, we have a mysterious message from Wan and an actress who sounds more than willing to trust him.
