We may not have to wait long to see Jane Levy (Evil Dead) and Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) face a new masked killer.
According to Jeff Sneider, River is scheduled for release in theaters on January 15, 2027. Sneider shared the news on X, adding that a trailer is expected “sooner rather than later.”
The reported date follows Dread Central’s exclusive report that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse were closing in on the film after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Written and directed by Joshua Giuliano, River follows estranged sisters who reunite with their younger brother, played by Max Mattern (Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy), to scatter their father’s ashes along a remote river. When their boat breaks down, they find themselves stranded and stalked by a faceless killer, played by Dane DiLiegro (Prey).
The film was originally announced as a Shudder Original Production, with Independent Film Company handling its theatrical release.
Dread Central’s Matt Konopka caught the TIFF premiere and awarded it 3.5 stars in his review, comparing its brutality to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the French Extremity movement.
“It’s a movie that begs to be watched with a crowd,” he wrote.
