October gets the parties and the pumpkin displays, but September is when the streaming services quietly do the heavy lifting. Every major platform loads its horror catalog on or around September 1, which means the month opens with hundreds of titles landing at once and then keeps trickling premieres out for the next four weeks. Shudder kicks off its four month Season of Screams. Peacock drops a sizable stack of Universal Monsters and Blumhouse titles on day one. Paramount+ adds three Pet Sematary films and every Prophecy. Tubi, Plex and Kanopy all add real horror for free or for a library card.

Below is what we could confirm as of August 28, 2026, organized by service so you can see exactly what your own subscriptions are picking up. Mārama. Taratoa Stappard’s film has been called the first Māori Gothic horror feature, and it took the top prize at SIFF this year. A young Māori woman travels to Victorian England in 1859, uncovers what her family’s colonial history actually cost, and goes looking for the Englishman responsible. It is sitting at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes as of August 28, across 49 reviews.

Goody Goody. Raymond Creamer directs a home birth that goes wrong while a blizzard seals the house shut. Colleen Foy and Samantha Robinson star. Shudder picked this up alongside Parasomnia ahead of Overlook.

Bloody Tennis. Nikias Chryssos directs a German sports horror set at an elite European tennis academy, where Sophie has to survive her teammates before she survives the training. Sandra Guldberg Kampp stars. It world premiered at Locarno this summer.

The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 continues with new episodes on Sundays through September 13.

Netflix

Netflix does not usually get credit as a horror destination, and then it turns around and adds Alien, Aliens, all four Jaws movies and six Resident Evil films in the space of two days.

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. The fourth chapter of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology gives Ella Beatty the axe, with Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall, Billie Lourd, Jessica Barden and Sarah Paulson filling out the household. Murphy’s version puts Lizzie and the family maid at the center and frames the murders as an escape route.

Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2. The animated Hawkins spinoff returns for a second run.

My Sad Dead. Pablo Larraín’s limited series adapts Mariana Enriquez, whose short fiction is some of the nastiest and most politically alert horror writing anyone is doing right now. Mercedes Morán plays Ema, a recently retired doctor who can see and hear the dead, trying to process her mother’s death when her niece Julie arrives and three teenagers turn up murdered in the neighborhood.

Balaraw: Blood Island. A Filipino horror series about a woman searching an uncharted island for her missing mother.

Delusion. A Thai series in which a father’s dementia makes him the prime suspect in a murder, while his family insists something else has taken hold of him.

American Horror Story: 13. FX is running this one hard, and the schedule is built to finish before Halloween rather than crawl past it. Thirteen half hour episodes across six weeks: episodes 1 through 3 on September 24, episodes 4 through 6 on October 1, then two a week on October 8, 15 and 22, with the finale on October 29. Constance Langdon, Cordelia Goode, Madison Montgomery, Marie Laveau, Rubber Man, Twisty the Clown and Kai Anderson all return. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd and Jessica Lange are back, with Madelaine Petsch, Tig Notaro and John Waters joining. Episodes stream on Hulu the same day they air on FX.
