“The Witches of the Western Wood”
In Hell, Sarah Archer pleads for her very soul,
Life, from the beginning, unfair—so everyone she told.
Yet her sister Mary, the light, the good, a righteous path attained,
While Sarah could never regain the promise she had sold.
Her confession, long and true,
Of womanhood in Sleepy Hollow—and the man she once knew.
Then to love, good Mary, forbidden to find a similar embrace,
Yet Sarah drank from that fountain, her hypocrisy firmly in place.
Faithful Thomas, oh Thomas, another woman he had chosen,
Sarah wondered who.
Death would come for both, their final fate now woven,
As the Devil’s Bible promised payment long overdue.
Review
This issue takes a much darker turn as we finally get to witness the downward spiral of Sister Sarah Archer. What begins as jealousy, bitterness, and hypocrisy slowly transforms into something far more sinister. Sarah knows the path she is walking, yet every terrible decision seems to drag her another step closer to Hell. By the time she realizes the true cost of her actions, the Devil already has one hand wrapped around her soul.
One of the more disturbing aspects of the story was Sarah’s foul use of animal deaths to secure her own damnation. There is something especially wicked about sacrificing innocent creatures for selfish desires, and it helped drive home just how far the woman had fallen. Her jealousy toward Mary and obsession with Thomas only make matters worse. This isn’t some poor soul accidentally dabbling in forces she doesn’t understand. Sarah keeps digging the hole—and the Devil is more than happy to hand her the shovel.
Return to Sleepy Hollow: Witches of the Western Woods Part 2 was a wonderfully dark continuation of the series. I especially enjoyed watching Sarah’s descent from a bitter and jealous woman into someone willing to bargain away everything she once claimed to believe in. I give this issue four out of five stars. Now, let’s see what Hell has planned for Sarah Archer!
