In 2022, AMC launched Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe with an adaptation of the author’s most iconic novel, Interview with the Vampire. After two critically acclaimed seasons, the series moved on to Rice’s second novel, The Vampire Lestat, for its third season, even changing its title to reflect the story it was telling.
Now, just days after the Season 3 finale (which I have a lot of opinions about), AMC has officially renewed the series for a fourth season — and, once again, it’s getting a new name. Following the adaptation’s progression through Anne Rice’s novels, Season 4 will be titled Queen of the Damned, shifting the spotlight to the ancient vampire Akasha, portrayed by Sheila Atim.
The announcement was made Friday during the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, which featured executive producers Mark Johnson and Hannah Moscovitch alongside cast members Jacob Anderson, Assad Zaman, Sheila Atim, and Eric Bogosian.
Although Atim only appeared briefly throughout Season 3, her awakening, and the catastrophic consequences that followed, left little doubt that her story was only just beginning.
Alongside the renewal announcement, AMC released the first teaser for Queen of the Damned, offering a chilling glimpse at Akasha’s rise.
The teaser opens with images of women protesting as Akasha speaks in voiceover.
“You who have called to me, not knowing my name. You, with your dresses stained, your faces down in the mud. I have heard you. Do not let them shape you into the size of their cage. Women, get up out of the ditches where they have thrown you, and come with me now to where the men are gathered… Kill them all.”
The teaser ends with the now-familiar cry from Akasha’s awakening in Season 3:
“I am the answer.”
Season 4 will be executive produced and showrun by Hannah Moscovitch, who previously served as a writer on the first two seasons of Interview with the Vampire before becoming an executive producer on The Vampire Lestat. She will once again be joined by executive producers Mark Johnson and Rolin Jones.
This all comes on the heels of Sunday’s Season 3 finale, which transformed New York City into a post-apocalyptic nightmare following the events of the Great Conversion. The episode ended with Lestat (Sam Reid) reflecting on the devastation he had helped unleash before quietly admitting, “The fault was mine.”
Long before the renewal was announced, showrunner Rolin Jones hinted that Season 3 represented only half of a much larger story, previously describing The Vampire Lestat as “part one of two.” That suggests many of the season’s unseen events — and the aftermath of its shocking finale — will be explored in the next chapter.
After many of Season 3’s adaptational choices, Queen of the Damned has a lot to prove. While I’m excited to see Sheila Atim take center stage as Akasha, whether this next season succeeds will depend on whether AMC can build on the strongest parts of The Vampire Lestat without repeating the decisions that left many longtime fans divided.
