Supergirl’s Story Has The DCU’s Best Excuse To Reintroduce Batman

Supergirl‘s story and setup gives the movie a perfect excuse to reintroduce Batman once more to the DC Universe, and to help set up the Dark Knight’s impending full arrival in the franchise as well as his upcoming solo movie. Waiting to debut the DCU timeline‘s live-action Batman has already appeared to be a wise move for the new DC cinematic universe, even if we’re all eager to see what this next era for the Caped Crusader could look like.

While Creature Commandos introduced Batman via a short animated sequence of him taking down a range of criminals – showing this Batman as well-versed in combat, and someone who’s operated as a vigilante for a fair few years now – we naturally still know very little about the hero, or indeed the DCU’s version of Gotham, since we seem to be a way of the movie release of Batman: The Brave & The Bold.

However, just because this is the case doesn’t mean the DC Universe is banned from revealing more to us about its Batman or the wider world’s awareness of him – and 2026 is the perfect year to flesh out a little more of the mythos around the DCU’s Batman and build the hype up for his impending full arrival even further, especially given how 2026’s DCU movies can do so.

Supergirl’s Story & Themes Are A Perfect Gateway Into The DCU’s Batman Story

Unlike her more generally chipper cousin, Supergirl is shown to still be struggling with the loss of her parents and homeworld after the destruction of Krypton in the current present day of the DCU, and seems set to spend much of the 2026 Supergirl movie navigating around how to be a hero and do what’s right despite feeling as though she’s now truly alone in the world in a sense.

Unless the DCU executes an enormous and likely ill-thought-out retcon for its Batman, this interestingly will be the rough premise the hero has also been through previously in the universe during his own arc to become The Dark Knight, given his backstory involves the death of his own parents sending him into a similar kind of turmoil.

Indeed, it doesn’t seem impossible for the DCU to use this to kick off some more in-universe setup for Batman’s full impending arrival in the franchise – even if that’s just Superman telling Supergirl she’s not the only brooding and more lone wolf-type hero he’s ever seen protect Earth. That said, even if this isn’t the case, Supergirl‘s narrative does still help tee up the franchise for some similar themes to be explored with the Caped Crusader.

2026’s DCU Releases Mean It’s The Perfect Year To Start Setting Up The Franchise’s Batman More Fully

Of course, Supergirl is not the DC Universe’s only 2026 offering, since not long after Supergirl‘s June 2026 release, we have Clayface‘s debut in October to look forward to. Naturally, the idea that Supergirl’s thematic setup will be followed by a literal delve into Gotham and one of its most underrated supervillains makes it even more possible for 2026’s DCU releases to start setting Batman’s story up further, even if just in small ways.

Following on from Creature Commandos having a brief glimpse of Batman during Doctor Phosphorus’ backstory that tied into the events of the show without stealing center stage, having either or both of Supergirl and Clayface continue to establish small details about the DC Universe’s version of the hero – even if that’s only by showing how the hero’s reputation proceeds him – could be vitally useful in terms of making the DCU’s Batman seem more imposing from the offset.

As one of DC’s biggest heroes – and a character who has held movie series down in his own right without any need for a bigger universe more than once in the past – letting Batman have extensive in-universe and real-world setup before his solo movie debut is sure to be a move that would pay off for the DC Universe overall, if movies like Supergirl and Clayface are able to dedicate some of their runtime to doing so.
