This week’s finale of Batwoman season one brought a new twist to one of its ongoing villains, as it depicted Hush/Tommy Elliot undergoing surgery to alter his face – to that of Bruce Wayne.

This is a twist that also took place in comic books – but what’s interesting is, Hush’s new identity has also revealed CW’s Bruce Wayne, played (at least in the face) by Warren Christie of Alphas fame.

Though “Bruce Wayne” will appear in Batwoman season 2, it’ll actually be Hush hiding under his face – meaning Christie will essentially play a dual role, a fact the audience, but not Batwoman, will be aware of. This also means Christie will ostensibly replace Gabriel Mann, who played Hush in five episodes of Batwoman season one.

“We have a fun dynamic happening because it’s not Bruce Wayne, it’s Tommy Elliot, and Tommy and Alice have this really humorous relationship where Tommy is irrational and brash and hyper, and a little bit spastic, and Alice is calculated and has her own to-do list,” Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries told Entertainment Weekly. “So, it will be fun. I’m looking forward to throwing them in scenes together.”

Dries explained that despite an early production mandate not to use or depict Batman or Bruce Wayne, CW and DC were receptive to the idea of Hush wearing his face – as long as audiences would know the whole time.

“They were ready to play ball, but there’s this one caveat, which is that we needed to be on the A-side of the information. Meaning, originally, we wanted it that Bruce Wayne shows up, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God,’ [then] reveal ‘Holy s—, that’s Tommy Elliot,’ But that wasn’t in the cards for us,” she explained. “So we were like, ‘What if we show you the A-side? We’re all in on it so nobody’s thinking it’s Bruce Wayne from the audience’s point of view. We’re not getting anybody’s hopes up.’ And boom, we get to see how this lands on our heroes and watch them react to it.”

Interestingly, Tommy Elliot won’t be the only character with a new face when Batwoman season 2 arrives some time in 2021, as lead actor Ruby Rose has announced her plans to leave the role of Kate Kane.
