The new Exorcist film has been kept pretty tightly under wraps. However, we do have some exciting casting updates. Not only will the upcoming project feature the wonderful Scarlett Johansson, but it has also added newcomer Jacobi Jupe to the cast.

While Johansson has worked on some horror adjacent titles in the past, this will mark her first strictly horror role. So far, we know that the film will star Johansson and that Mike Flanagan will be directing with support from Blumhouse. So far, this movie sounds awesome.

Jupe is riding high following their critically acclaimed performance in Hamnet. The child actor is currently highly sought after following his emotionally driven role in the film. Not only that, but he also recently won the Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Young Actor.

“ ‘The Exorcist’ is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold and terrifying within its universe.”- Mike Flanagan

Scarlett Johansson, The Exorcist

“Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”- Mike Flanagan

Now, this all comes following the mess that was Exorcist: Believer. Luckily, Blumhouse saw an opportunity and purchased the rights to the upcoming film along with NBCUni and Peacock. So, we have some amazing talent, one of the best horror directors around, and hoards of cash from Blumhouse. If this version of The Exorcist doesn’t succeed, maybe we should stop making them for a while.

However, you shouldn’t worry too much. Flanagan already has a history of improving franchises with his directorial spin. Longtime horror fans may remember a 2014 film titled Ouija. The film mainly focused on, you guessed it, a Ouija board.

Unfortunately, the film did not perform well with general audiences. Luckily, Flanagan arrived to direct the second film, Ouija: Origin of Evil and managed to turn an otherwise stale and boring subject into something with teeth. If he can do the same thing with the Exorcist project, we should be in good shape.
