Google is testing new features for Android 16 that will let users customize the double-tap power button gesture. The update will let users choose between launching the camera or the Google Wallet app with this shortcut.

The Android 16 Beta 1 brings a new “double tap power button” menu in the Settings > Gestures section. Thanks to this, users will now have three options:

  • Open the system camera application (current default)

  • Launch the Google Wallet app

  • Disable the shortcut entirely

Most Android phones currently support a double-tap gesture of the power button, which typically opens the system camera application.

The new option to use the shortcut for Google Wallet has to be inspired by iPhones, where a double-tap of the power button opens the Wallet app.

The feature was first spotted in the Android 15 QPR2 Beta 3 by Android Authority. It’s currently in testing and not officially announced, but it’s expected to be fully implemented in Android 16.

As Android 16 is still in development, additional changes and features may be introduced before its final release. Google has not yet provided an official statement or release date for Android 16.

This would be a cool addition to Android, but I hope it provides more functionality than just a wallet. Either way, I’d still use it for the camera.
