Dating in the 2020s isn’t easy, to put it mildly. It’s a digital horrorshow with ghouls around every corner. Such a horrorshow is bursting with material for horror filmmakers to tell stories about the dangers of finding love in the modern age. Director Mark Gantt‘s new film Soul Mates is one such tale, though with Saw-like twist. And it’s streaming now on Tubi.
Read the full synopsis below:
This psychological thriller with elements of terror follows two unsuspecting strangers, Jason and Allison who find themselves participants in a twisted new dating service, led by the Matchmaker, that forces the two singles inside a nightmarish maze designed to help them find their Soul Mate—or die trying.

Neal McDonough, Annie Illonzeh, and Charlie Weber star in the film co-written by Chris LaMont and horror’s own Joe Russo (not that Marvel guy).
Russo told Dread Central in a 2024 interview, “The idea was to show how people can bond through trauma. It’s an extreme version of how relationships in real life often form through shared experiences, both good and bad.”

Creating set pieces like the ones in the above clip was a careful dance for Gantt, especially in bringing Russo and LaMont’s script to life.
“Each set piece in the maze had to make its own statement,” Gantt previously told Dread Central. “We wanted to ensure that scenes like the karaoke bar and the ‘fancy’ dinner not only heightened the tension but also highlighted the absurdity of these contrived romantic scenarios.”
In his review of the film for Dread Central, Nick Taylor wrote, “With its blend of suspense, gore, and a dash of dark humor, Soul Mates offers a definitively fresh perspective on the perils of modern dating.”
Soul Mates is streaming for free on Tubi!
