“Dead Notes”

In the dark – 3 am, Lauren springs out of bed as the power is cut from her apartment. Her white noise generator was the only thing saving Dean and her from the nightmare manifesting on the cold winter streets outside. Music! Play anything on your cell phone, just make sure to crank up the volume! Unfortunately for the young couple, the carolers could be seen approaching their stoop.

“Gone Fishin’”

That Christmas Eve, Alistair and Bernie had a plan to get unlimited presents from the big guy. Would it take science, magic, or a combination of both to get their way with things? Would their little trap work? Only if they could stay awake for the big reveal!

“Northerners”

Shane Lima had crashed his snowmobile in the backcountry of Wisconsin on Christmas Eve. With broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder, he had a 25-mile walk back to where he came from. He would not survive the night in the harsh cold of the northern woods. That is until he found the lone ice-fishing cabin on the local lake.

Now Shane and the owner of the shack, a ghostly spector named Donna, fight for their lives. A beast, pulled from the pages of a Nordic Edda, had hunted these lands since time immemorial. Shane was just the latest victim of the monster’s feast. Would he end up sharing Donna’s fate?

“Krampus Slayers”

Even in modern times, the past has a way of clinging on. When cultural intolerance brings out the old ways of man, anything is possible. For Tibo and his gypsy grandmother, life in the Bavarian state of Germany was hard at best. On this Christmas Eve, Tibo and his friend Anna would learn a secret about their village that the elders could not hide.

In post-World War II Europe, technology and science have not replaced magic, monsters, and old superstitions. No, not yet. Old traditions die in the shadows just like the evil that spawns them.

Reviewer Notes

Now, this is a Christmas comic book I can get behind. I enjoyed each one of the stories, as they all had a unique angle not seen in traditional Christmas tales. I could see any of the chapters being fleshed out into a full Netflix Or SiFi channel movie.

The “Dead Notes” story completely reminded me of the “Vanishing on 7th Street” (2010) movie starring Hayden Christensen. My favorite story in this Image Comics special “Dread the Halls” has to be “Northerners”. What a sad, sad tale it was. I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of Image Comics, as they seem to focus on art first and foremost. Their stories can be quite basic at times.

For this Christmas one-shot, I give it the coveted five out of stars. It was well-earned. I will definitely break out the comic book again next year.
