Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is almost here, dear reader. Though we don’t eat animal flesh, my husband and I still enjoy cooking some of our favorite side dishes and spending the day connecting. Plus, it’s nice to have the chance to take a long weekend and escape from the hustle and bustle. I think we might even make time for a horror movie or three.

If you’re planning to take in a horror picture over the holiday weekend, don’t forget that Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is currently streaming on Netflix. In fact, just the other day, it was the #1 most searched completed horror feature on Google. I love that about the horror space. We keep it spooky all year. While the mainstream set is busy watching Hallmark original Christmas movies, we are over here taking in films from one of the founding fathers of the torture porn genre. Different strokes for different folks, amirite?

If you’re keen to escape to a place where Thanksgiving quickly becomes the deadliest day of the year, navigate over to Netflix and show the film some love. I’m not always taken with director Eli Roth’s output and I had a great time with the film. Give it a shot and you may just have a similar reaction.

Roth directs Thanksgiving from a script by Jeff Rendell. The picture is based on the fake trailer of the same name that played before the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse. Fans clamored for Roth to realize the spoof trailer as a feature. And after years of languishing in development hell, the film has finally come to fruition. Hooray.

The seasonal slasher eschews the gritty aesthetic of the fake trailer for a crisper and more modern approach. I was unsure how I felt about that when the real trailer for Thanksgiving dropped. But after taking in the flick, I think Roth made the right choice.

The setup for this brutal holiday slasher on Netflix goes like this:

A mysterious masked maniac terrorizes residents of Plymouth, Massachusetts, one year after a Black Friday riot ended in tragedy. Picking off victims one by one, the seemingly random revenge killings soon become part of a larger, sinister plan.

That’s all we have for you at present. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more exciting updates on which films within your interest set are available to stream and where you can find them. If you’d like to keep up with my musings on Threads, you can find me on there as @FunWithHorror.
