Apple fans have been anticipating the M4 since spring, and now that we’re in the throes of fall, it’s expected that Macs containing the new chip will arrive any time. But according to a reliable rumor, the M4 MacBook Air won’t be an autumn baby. The newest and most powerful version of the Air will arrive in early 2025, bearing virtually the same chassis it has since 2022.
In a report for Bloomberg, leaker Mark Gurman said Apple will soon begin manufacturing 13-inch and 15-inch versions of the M4 MacBook Air, codenamed J713 and J715. Unnamed insiders familiar with the company’s production schedule told Gurman that the updated Air will look similar to the current design, which has been in place since Apple did away with the wedge chassis in 2022.
In a rare attempt at bringing all of its Macs up to date at once, Apple is preparing to release M4 versions of the iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air, according to a previous rumor. M4 silicon will lend the refreshed computers improved AI performance—a complement to macOS Sequoia, a September operating system update that brought Apple Intelligence to compatible laptops and desktops. M4 Macs are also thought to ship with increased base memory and storage, finally starting at 16GB of memory instead of the typical 8GB.
Many of the updated Macs are expected to appear during Apple’s mysterious “week of announcements,” which marketing executive Greg Joswiak said will begin on Monday, Oct. 28. But if Gurman’s insiders are to be believed, the M4 MacBook Air won’t be among them. Instead, it will launch after a December software update, meaning orders are unlikely to begin until January 2025 at the earliest. After the new Air will come the refreshed Mac Studio, which is reportedly slated to arrive between March and June.
