“A Choice Of Lions!”

N’kantu has just defeated the mutant called the Living Pharaoh, but the Ruby Scarab artifact has escaped his grasp. Now the four Elementals who have enslaved the Living Mummy send one of their own to capture the gem and put an end to their arrogant envoy. However, the ancient Chief of the Swarilis had other plans. If N’kantu can retrieve the magical scarab for himself, the curse placed upon him over two-thousand years ago by Pharoah Aram-set may be lifted.

While the Living Mummy tracks through the desert looking for the Ruby Scarab, a war between Israel and the Arab States is being waged all around him. This is a new millenia. The old gods have been forgotten, and new ones have taken their place. Within hours of entering the combat zone, N’kantu will discover just how powerful human technology has become.

Will N’kantu come to accept the prowess of women soldiers fighting in the Israeli army? Can ancient skin withstand direct blasts from Arabic battle tanks? Has the Yom Kippur War stopped any chance of N’kantu from finding the Ruby Scarab? Collect the series to find out!

“Flying Saucer”

Note: originally presented in Weird Worlds #16

When space aliens invade, does it matter which planet they come from? That seems to be the debate between two irate movie goers as they are kicked out of the Saturday night creature feature. So what if one of them has seen multiple flying saucers recently? Does that make him an expert in the pilot’s motives? The other one thinks not!

Reviewer Notes

Things aren’t looking good for the Swarili Chieftain in the 20th century. As the ancestors of his slave masters battle over lands once flush with life, space aliens take control of his very soul. There isn’t a lot of material about the Living Mummy in Marvel Comics. However, it seems the writers are trying to bring him back in the recent issues Crypt of Shadows. If you want to do a deep dive into this character, this is the place to start.

I find it interesting that writer Len Wein set his story in the middle of the 1973 conflict between the Israelis and the Arab States. This is why Marvel Comics stood out among so many of their competitors. While Batman was chasing the Joker around Gotham for the thousandth time, Marvel characters were dealing with real world geopolitical wars and disasters. N’kantu was just one of many that dealt with these scenarios. I give Supernatural Thrillers #10 three out of five stars.
