Nvidia announced its next-gen Blackwell AI hardware in March and said it would arrive later in the year. Now that it’s later in the year, it appears Nvidia has had to adjust its timeline a bit. According to a new report, Amazon won’t get Blackwell systems for its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing platform until early 2025, which is later than expected and almost an entire year after it was first unveiled.

The report on Nvidia’s slightly-delayed rollout of Blackwell comes from Bloomberg. It quotes AWS CEO Matt Garman, who says Nvidia’s timelines have “shifted.” Mr. Garman says AWS has early samples of Blackwell now but doesn’t expect production units in high volume to arrive until early next year. Garman says the delay is due to Nvidia trying to get its yields up after it had to redo the mask for Blackwell to fix a design flaw, which Garman calls a “respin.” In August, this design flaw was leaked to the press. Nvidia eventually confirmed it in a subsequent earnings call.

In its Q2 conference call with investors and analysts, Nvidia’s CFO acknowledged it had to take a second swing at the mask TSMC was using to make Blackwell chips. CFO and EVP Colette Kress stated the mask had already been changed to improve yields. CEO Jensen Huang followed up on those comments, saying that the mask change was complete and no functional changes were necessary. Despite the setback, Nvidia says it’s still on target to rake in billions in Blackwell hardware in this final quarter before the spigot really opens next year and tens of billions come pouring into its coffers.

Bloomberg reports that Amazon Web Services will be one of the first companies to get a bulk order of Blackwell hardware, which is unsurprising given it’s the world’s largest cloud computing platform. Google Cloud also has some Blackwell cabinets up and running (above). Microsoft’s Azure cloud business has also stated it’s the first cloud company to have Blackwell hardware up and running.

Despite the short delay in the production ramp for Blackwell, it doesn’t seem like it will dampen enthusiasm for Nvidia’s newest AI hardware. The company has previously stated it’s already sold out for all of 2025, so the gravy train is showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.
