In retail terms Halloween is almost over; stores are pulling scary merch and replacing it with holiday decor. But the season is just beginning for horror movie buffs and that means new movie roundups to close out the year.
The streaming service Shudder is gearing up for the last fourth of 2024 with some pretty good titles to view if you are a subscriber. To start with V/H/S/Beyond gets an early October release. This is the seventh installment of the anthology which focuses a little bit more on the sci-fi aspect of horror this time.
Below are five titles coming to the service to look out for. We are particularly interested in Jayro Bustamante’s Rita. This is the Guatemalan director’s first film following his “insult trilogy” which shined a light on some of his country’s prejudices (Indio, homosexuality, communist) against its diverse groups of people.
Also keep an eye out for everyone’s favorite zombie apocalypse side-kick Nick Frost who stars in Black Cab which will stream on Shudder in early November. He also has his own project, Get Away, which will screen at Fantastic Fest before heading to the Shudder at a later date.
V/H/S/Beyond
Streaming On Shudder October 4: Directed by Jordan Downey, Christian Long & Justin Long, Justin Martinez, Virat Pal, Kate Siegel, and Jay Cheel.
The seventh installment of the V/H/S franchise will feature six new bloodcurdling tapes, placing horror at the forefront of a sci-fi-inspired hellscape.

Streaming On Shudder October 11: Written and Directed by Benjamin Barfoot
A boy and his young, recently widowed stepmother find themselves in fear for their lives after they are visited by a strange and unexplainable creature – something that appears to mimic a horrifying version of the boy’s recently deceased father.

Eighteen-year-old Romain has just graduated and makes a stop at his dealer’s place to try a new pill. As he heads off to a party, he sees an injured woman on the side of the road and decides to help her, but when she gets in his car, she suddenly smashes her own head against the dashboard, bleeding out until she dies. Is this a bad trip? Or is it something else? One thing is for sure, it’s only the beginning of the night.

Streaming On Shudder November 8: Starring Nick Frost, Synnøve Karlsen, Luke Norris
When Anne and Patrick hail a black cab after a night out their driver is chatty, jovial even, but they are in no mood to talk. In fact, the couple is barely on speaking terms. That is, until they realize the driver has no intention of taking them home. Locked in the cab with no means of escape, the driver transports the couple to a stretch of deserted and supposedly haunted road. But what is his purpose? Is he mad or just plain evil? And why has he selected Anne and Patrick as his victims?

While fleeing a neglectful household, thirteen-year-old Rita is placed in an oppressive state-run orphanage. Rita’s arrival provides a glimmer of hope to the girls inside, who share a prophecy that an angel will appear to release them. Encouraged by one another, the girls plan an escape to claim their freedom and expose the orphanage’s abuses of power. Based on the true story behind one of Guatemala’s most harrowing tragedies, RITA shines a light on the brave orphans whose fight for survival inspired a nationwide outcry for justice and reform.
