Under Paris Netflix

I can’t stop talking about Under Paris, Netflix’s summer dip into aquatic horror courtesy of French extremity filmmaker Xavier Gens (Frontiers). Way back in 2010, another French extremity pioneer, Alexandre Aja, set the theatrical scene ablaze with Piranha 3D, a goofy, silly, 3D bloodbath that delivered more nudity and gore than you could shake a Richard Dreyfuss cameo at.

Swimming towards Netflix success

That we’ve had two French filmmakers dive into similar territory is remarkable, and Under Paris was the kind of unassuming, gory, outrageous aquatic horror the scene had been missing for quite some time. While the creature feature currently holds the title of the most-viewed monster movie ever watched on the world’s largest streaming platform, the campy thriller ride is now swimming toward being Netflix’s most-watched non-English film ever.

Per Netflix: Hitting Top 10 in 93 countries in its first week, this horror about a shark in the Seine is “worthy of swimming into the wake of Jaws,” raves Variety.

Under Paris’ competition for the top spot is another curious oddity. Roar Uthaug of Cold Prey and The Wave fame (both very good, especially Cold Prey) debuted 2022’s Troll, a disaster epic steeped in Norweigan mythology. It was a little scary, a little heartfelt, and a lot, well… cool? It was a giant troll, come on!

Check out a trailer for that Netflix thriller below:

It’s the battle of the behemoths, then. Or, more accurately, the battle of the ancient troll and the genetically modified super shark. Both have pretty solid eco-fables at their core, too, which if you know me is pretty sick.

We’ll keep you updated here at Dread Central on all the latest news, including the rumored Troll sequel, a possible Under Paris sequel (Gens has expressed interest), and the confirmed Crawl 2. If you’re a creature feature fan, what a time to be alive.
