A new sci-fi series is in development, set to plunge humanity into a race to thwart the end of the world. Legendary Television has acquired the television rights to adapt Seveneves, the award winning sci-fi novel by Neal Stephenson for the small screen, Deadline reports today.

Seveneves follows “how the best scientific minds come to the same conclusion after a meteor shatters the moon into seven pieces: in two years’ time, all humans on Earth will be destroyed by a ‘hard rain’ that will make the planet uninhabitable. In a feverish race against the inevitable, nations around the globe band together to devise a plan to ensure survival for humanity, initiating a new chapter for mankind.”

Cue the ticking time bomb, as nations must band together to devise a plan to ensure the survival of humanity in outer space. Five thousand years later, their progeny — seven races now 3 billion strong — embark on another audacious journey to an alien world utterly transformed by cataclysm and time: Earth.

Former Color Force executive Allison Friedman (The Mortuary Collection) will executive produce the Legendary Television series.

The novel published in 2015 by William Morrow. It won the Prometheus Award for Best Novel and was picked by President Obama for his Summer Reading List. So, it should likely come as no surprise that this isn’t the first time an adaptation was announced. In 2016, director Ron Howard was attached to direct and produce for Skydance Media and Imagine Entertainment.

Stay tuned for additional details as they arrive.
