San Diego Comic Con may not be the be-all, end-all of collectibles reveals that it used to be, but even so, SDCC 2024 definitely delivered with a healthy injection of Marvel merchandise to look forward to! And from Hasbro, that means a multitude of new Marvel Legends figures—including upcoming Marvel Legends Crystal & Lockjaw and Doctor Strange & Wong (and Bats the ghost dog) figures!
If there was any doubt that we are still living in a golden age of Marvel Comics action figures, Hasbro largely dispelled those notions with their comic-heavy blast of reveals at the 2024 SDCC over the weekend.
It’s going to take several posts to cover all of the newly revealed Hasbro offerings, so let’s start here with some of my favorite two-packs featuring animal companions…
Perhaps the most fan-demanded figure debuting at SDCC 2024 was the long, long awaited giant teleporting canine, Lockjaw! And he isn’t coming alone—the Inhuman elementalist Crystal will be accompanying him!
Despite the heavy push Marvel tried to give the Inhumans a few years back, that particular franchise failed to ever get its footing with hardcore fans, much less with mainstream audiences. And so, despite multiple comic series and even a TV series, the Inhumans’ presence has really dwindled in recent years.
This is also reflected in the dearth of Hasbro Marvel Legends Inhumans figures, which is limited to a couple Black Bolts, an exclusive Medusa and last year’s Karnak (from the Totally Awesome Hulk wave). Despite fervent cries from the fans over the years, even the fan-favorite pooch of the Inhumans has never come to Hasbro 6” figure fruition.
But no longer! As announced during SDCC 2024, Marvel Legends Lockjaw—and his best pal Crystal—will be going up for sale as an Amazon exclusive two-pack later this year!
Lockjaw isn’t super-articulated, and instead features swap-out back legs so that he can either be standing or sitting. This isn’t as fancy as the Mezco ONE:12 Collective Lockjaw from a few years back, but it’s far cheaper and stylistically fits in better with Hasbro Marvel Legends figures.
We are getting Crystal in what is arguably her most recognizable costume. I fully expect we’ll see her in her Avengers leather jacket look and Fantastic Four costume in the future, but I think this classic costume was the right pick for her debut appearance.
Hasbro invested in brand new elemental effects for Crystal which look killer, which reinforce my belief that we’ll get other versions of her eventually to maximize the usage of these effects. Gorgon and Triton are the next logical Inhumans for Hasbro to produce, and neither has gotten a mass release as 5″ or larger toys since the 90s Fantastic Four animated figures.
Meanwhile, on the mystical end of the spectrum, we’re getting a two-pack of a modern-ish Doctor Strange with the inaugural comic-styled Wong Legends figure. The Doctor Strange in this set is a bit of a niche pick, as it’s a specific Dormammu-infected Stephen Strange with an interchangeable Dormammu head. It’s a weird choice, but I think it will suit the needs of many fans still needing a comic-based Strange.
Marvel Legends Wong isn’t the most flashy or exciting figure in his dark green outfit, but he is recognizable and comics-accurate. He’ll have standard orange magic effects in contrast to Strange’s purple ones.
The star of this pack would ordinarily be Wong, but for a lot of collectors I think it will actually end up being the bonus Bats the Ghost Dog figurine from the Donny Cates Doctor Strange run. I have to admit, I am also a big fan of this canine specter and am psyched to see him in Marvel Legends form.
Doctor Strange and Wong will go up for order on Amazon on August 15th, with Crystal and Lockjaw at an as-yet unannounced later date. Will you be filling key gaps in *your* collection with either of these sets, Marvel collectors?
