NME’s latest star of The Cover, Lola Young, has compiled an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.

The south London songwriter features on The Cover this week (June 24) as we continue to renew our commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover, and the full interview with Lola Young can be read here, written by Rhian Daly and featuring photography by Ashley Osborn.

To celebrate, Young has put together a playlist titled ‘Songs For When I Want To Feel Sexy’, featuring tracks from Doja Cat, Gwen Stefani, Willow, Amaarae and more. Listen to the full playlist below on Spotify, and here on Apple Music.

Last Friday (June 21), Young released her first full-length album, ‘This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway’. In a five-star review, NME described the record as “essential, captivatingly messy pop”, saying that the 23-year-old has “the genuine star power to further develop an already strong artistic identity.”

Speaking to NME for The Cover, she described the diaristic approach she applies to her songs. “I think any artist where [they’re] not honest [in their lyrics], you see straight through,” she said.

“I’ve learned that songs are perfect for you when you’ve written them, and then they’re gonna connect with people, but, for you, it changes. The album is gritty, real and raw. It’s honest and that’s what I want to be and what I am at the moment.”
