In her feature film debut Humane, director Caitlin Cronenberg tackles quite a few massive issues, including ecological disaster, humane euthanasia, sacrificing yourself for the greater good, and toxic family dynamics. And yet, with so many heavy topics swirling around, she manages to craft something with a unique tone, one that is never too dour and always wryly smiling at the audience. Think a more subtle Starship Troopers with way more tailored suits and way fewer alien battles.
Read the full synopsis below:
Humane takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.
We spoke with Cronenberg about humane euthanasia, navigating dark comedy, and the allure of Peter Gallagher.
