“Blood Of The Hunter”

Sonja stood over the murdered body of a young crippled boy, a tear rolled down her weathered cheek. The lad was as arrogant as the day was long, and he showed no leniency towards women in general, but she could not blame someone so young with a smited hindrance such as his. The mighty Hyrkanian, Red Sonja, had not performed the killing blow, but she might as well have.

Ever since Sonja had robbed that brigand of his lofty treasure and left him completely defenseless inside the Toranian forest, people around her have mysteriously begun to die. Someone or something was stalking her. But how? Red Sonja  had evaded dozens of trackers over the years, and yet none of them were able to stay ahead of her path the way this devil-spawn could. By Erlik! There was some witchery at work here!

Will Red Sonja be able to stop her stalker before others are killed? Can the Hyrkanian warmaiden teach the young boy named Dunkin what his father could not? What secrets does the stolen key of Zamora unlock? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

Now, this is Marvel Comics at its best! Red Sonja returns with her second solo appearance in Marvel Feature volume number two, and it was a fun jaunt through the Hyborian outlands. There is no major story arc to follow here, just two thieves trying to outdo each in the midst of cheerful tavern-goers and an ongoing family dispute. No biggy.

The main selling point of this book is the writing and artwork. Bruce Jones and Frank Thorne make an incredible team-up. As of this review, I’ve been reading the original Conan the Barbarian series by Marvel. Bruce Jones had Roy Thomas beat hands down when writing an immersive story set in Robert E. Howard’s style and nuance. I have to admit Frank Thorne is becoming one of my favorite Bronze Age artists. In my opinion, Frank was one of Marvel’s best artists of that time.

This issue is what comic books should strive to be now. Hopefully, Marvel will get its act together and start producing books like this again. I’m giving this issue Marvel Feature four out of five stars.
