“Ritual Of Blood”

High above in the night sky, the full moon was waxing over southern California. Far below, a screaming roar burst forth from inside a large circus tent. Inside  the scene was that of grizzly primordial combat. Jack Russell, the Werewolf By Night, was being throttled by three African Lions. Leading the onslaught was their handler, the midget tamer named Midge.

The man had tried to set free the werewolf imprisoned by the Great Rihva. However, the beast had no other thoughts than revenge. The werewolf lunged at Midge and set the deadly battle in motion. Angered by the bitter little man, the carnival’s strongman, Elmo, waded into the fray to stop the jungle beasts from devouring their prey. The muscle-bound giant gave Jack Russle his word he would not be harmed. Elmo always kept his word!

Elsewhere, Lissa Russell and writer Buck Cowan race down the coastline searching for clues to Jack’s disappearance. The last place they had seen him was at Calliope’s Carnival and Circus near San Diego. They finally deduced that Jack had never left the carnival grounds that day. Lissa and Buck had no other option but to track down the roaming caravan of entertainers. The question was, where had the circus gone?

Will Jack Russell learn the true origins of the Blood Stone? What are Rihva’s intentions with the man turned werewolf by night? Can Buck and Lissa find Jack before the next full moon? Collect the series to find out!

Reviewer Notes

This issue was no epic clash by any means, but we are just at the beginning of the Jack Russell story as a whole. Before you can run, first you must maul a few circus freaks. The real key to this book is the Blood Stone and its apparent origins.

Before there was the Bloodstone family, there was the Wizard King Kaman-ru. The Blood Stone was made by his ancient hands. Pretty cool, eh? I thought it was cool. In any case, this was a low-key story with some retro circus tropes that can be recognized by all. I give issue seven of Werewolf By Night three out of five stars.
