“Boogeyman Vs Scarecrow”

Things that go bump in the night can only harm ones that lack wisdom. For it is those who arm themselves with knowledge, and show the courage to confront such superstitions, will the dark things then fade away. Or do they?

Somewhere in the slums of Pittsburgh, the year 1984, a street enforcer named T-Bone has just pinned one of his boss’s crack dealers up against a wall. It only took the muscled thug a day to run down his mark, but in a neighborhood dotted with crack houses even those with little imagination can find a lowlife thief with a terminal addiction.

The haggard looking junkie squirmed as T-Bone shifted his weight to one arm so he could retrieve a knife from inside his sleeveless jean jacket. It was time to pay for stealing product from the boss, the payment would come in the form of severed fingers. As T-Bone’s knife moved upward towards the thief’s throat, a cackling sound erupted from the hallway on the opposite side of the room.

T-Bone relaxed his hold slightly, then turned just in time to see a black figure dart past an open doorway into the apartment. In seconds the cackling noise changed positions. This time it came from a dark corner near the kitchenette. T-Bone released the junkie and spun completely around to find the source, but all that awaited him was shadows. Then a set of glowing eyes opened from within the darkness.

There was something there, but how could it have passed through a solid wall? Before T-Bone had time wrap his head around the possibilities, something ghastly lunged at him from the nothingness. The last image that flowed into T-Bone’s lifeless eyes was that of his own headless body standing above him.

Reviewer Notes

I don’t have many American Mythology comic books in my collection; however, I try not to focus solely on Marvel and DC Comics. Back in the 1980s I read more independent books than anything else at the time. With that said, this issue of Monster Tag Team has many similarities to the early black and white comics released by independent publishers such as Dark Horse Comics. In fact, when I opened this book, the nostalgia came flooding in as if I just opened a copy of Dark Horse Comics’ Aliens from 1988. What a rush.

The monsters here are very interesting. Writer S.A. Check creates a very interacted backstory for the Scarecrow character within the tight confines of a one-shot issue. I have a question for those American Mythology Productions fans out there who are more knowledgeable on this universe. Is this the first appearance of these two monster characters? If so, AMP needs to expand on these two guys. The Boogyman is clearly the star here. There is nothing like that old Cockney accent.

I’m giving this issue a solid three out of five stars. I will bump it up if me boyo, Mister B shows up under my bed tonight. I just hope a ‘Craw is there to save me.
