Netflix Brawl in Cell Block 99

Remember when Kevin James showed up in Becky as a skinhead and it was weird? He did fine in the role, but so much of what made Becky worth seeking out was just the chance to see Kevin James drop the Paul Blart shtick and try something different, more frightening. The same happened with Steve Carell in Foxtrot, though in that case, Carell successfully nabbed an Academy Award nomination. Broadly, we like it when funny guys get serious (Uncut Gems, anyone), and in 2017, Vince Vaughn did just that in S. Craig Zahler’s Brawl in Cell Block 99, which charted on Netflix last week.

Per Netflix: After working as a drug courier and getting into a brutal shootout with police, a former boxer finds himself at the mercy of his enemies as they force him to instigate violent acts that turn the prison he resides in into a battleground.

In our review of Brawl in Cell Block 99, we said it is “an assault on your senses that sees Vaughn in one of the best performances of the year.” It’s truly unlike anything you might have seen before. Since then, director S. Craig Zahler has only directed one other movie, 2018’s Dragged Across Concrete (though he is a credited writer on Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich), though Brawl debuted after Bone Tomahawk, which might be one of the most impressive one-two-punches of all time.

Fans have been excited to see Brawl in Cell Block 99 added to the Netflix library. Naturally, they’ve taken to social media to share their thoughts. Check out some choice reactions below:
