Love it or hate it, there’s no question that the Disney+ She-Hulk Attorney at Law live-action series has brought Jennifer Walters into the public eye like never before. And such an occasion certainly necessitated an all-new toy to coincide: the Disney+ Marvel Legends She-Hulk figure is now available for order! Is this lawyer worth her rate? Here’s my review of the new Infinity Ultron Series figure…
She-Hulk is easily amongst my favorite non-mutant Marvel characters, so I’ve been keen to pick up almost every modern action figure of her over the years. But unlike every other toy previously made of Bruce Banner’s cousin, this 6” action figure is based off of a real live actress (Tatiana Maslany) and not Shulkie’s comic book appearances.
Hasbro has been getting better and better at making female comic book action figures over the years, but do they make an MCU She-Hulk here as good as their comic versions?
Thankfully, the answer is a strong ‘Yes’ with only a handful of nits for me to pick. It’s not perfect, but the quality of this She-Hulk toy is at a high enough level that it’s within reach for the inevitable next attempt.
As is the most crucial aspect of any movie or TV-based toy, the actress likeness needs to be immediately apparent—and it is. The Tatiana Maslany portrait is recognizable right away, even if the neutral expression looks rather blah and lifeless for a character as rich with personality as Jennifer Walters. I sincerely hope for a smiling or even angry portrait on a future release.
Because the lighting changes from scene to scene in the Disney+ show, it’s a bit of a challenge to say definitely if Hasbro nailed the proper skin-tone here. It certainly is green, but to my eyes Miss Walters is a shade too whiteish green. I think she’s definitely a more notably vibrant green in most scenes of the series, but everyone will have an opinion on that. I can live with the green plastic as-is, but I would like to see a less pale color used next time.
On the articulation front, we get -almost- everything I’d want. I hugely appreciate the fully pin-less articulation scheme with double-hinged knees and elbows, and the hinged shoes with internal rockers are a dream. Even so, the long hair decimates any vertical range of motion on Shulk’s head, and the lack of butterfly swivel shoulders means arms-extended-thunderclaps are a complete no-go.
The full articulation scheme for the Disney+ She-Hulk Legends figure includes:
*Ball-Jointed Head (Restricted), Hips and Upper Torso
*Ball-Hinge Shoulders
*Swivel Biceps and Thighs
*Swivel-Hinge Wrists
*Pin-less Double-Jointed Knees and Elbows
*Hinged Shoes with internal Pivots
For accessories, Jen gets swap-out fists and open karate chop hands and… that’s really it. There’s an Infinity Ultron BAF leg, but that’s not for She-Hulk and she couldn’t hold it without grasping hands anyway.
It’s always disappointing to get a new ML figure with just hands as accessories, but I can accept that here given the extensive new tooling.
The super-cool shoe articulation, paint wash on the hair and beautifully textured singlet all help She-Hulk stand out even without compelling props.
Overall: This is a strong first MCU action figure for her, but I think there’s still some room for minor improvements in a future Disney+ Marvel Legends She-Hulk figure. A less bored face, a more vibrant skin tone and any kind of handheld accessory would be easy wins for Hasbro down the road, although the likeness, pin-less joints and solid construction/articulation scheme all combine to make this a very good figure in its own right.
