A long 8 years after the release of Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U, the next entry in the Platinum Games series is just a few months away. Nintendo announced its October 28 release date, accompanied by a new trailer, with a tweet. You can check out the trailer below.

The decision to announce the game’s release date over social media dampens hopes that Nintendo will have a big Summer Direct. At this point, the publisher’s schedule is mostly established, apart from 2 games rumored for this year, a Metroid Prime remake and a port of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to the Switch. Nintendo may yet surprise us, but it’s hard to come up with a reason Nintendo would share the Bayonetta news now if it did indeed have a video presentation planned for later this Summer.

Regardless of what its announcement means for Nintendo’s marketing cycle, Bayonetta 3 has been long awaited amongst fans of the frenetic action game series. It’s markedly different from all other games published by Nintendo due to its more adult content. Interestingly, in a first for the franchise, the game will include a family-friendly mode.

We’ll see if that widens its appeal amongst the diverse audience of Switch owners, and whether that will be enough to merit a fourth entry in the series. The last time Nintendo shared sales data about Bayonetta 2, the company said that it had sold 400,000 copies of the Switch version, just slightly more than it sold on. Wii U. That’s paltry compared to sales of other first-party Switch titles, Bayonetta 3 will need much stronger sales for the series to continue. We’ll see if it can hit the numbers it needs to when it releases in October.
