Video game franchise Fortnite and Marvel Comics are teaming up for a new series featuring the likes of Spider-Man, Wolverine and Iron Man fighting for the fate of the multiverse alongside the video game series’ heroes. As the second comics crossover for the franchises, and the first full series, Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War is set to be a major moment for both universes.
In a statement released Friday, Feb. 25, Marvel announced that a brand new five-part series, Fortnite X Marvel: Zero War, by Marvel’s Christos Gage, Epic Games’ Donald Mustard, and Sergio Davíla, will be debuting in June of this year. Taking place in the Marvel Universe, heroes from both sides are tasked with tracking down a Zero Shard, a piece of the reality-bending force in Fortnite’s world, while trying to stave of Fortnite antagonists the Imagined Order. The series will feature a bevy of popular Marvel characters, including Shuri, Iron Man, Spider-Man and Wolverine. Alongside the comic series, free and paid tie-in rewards will be available for Fortnite players. The crossover builds on both the 2020 one-shot Fortnite X Marvel – Nexus War: Thor, by Donny Cates and Greg Land, as well as the appearance of over 25 playable characters from Marvel in Fortnite.
With this Fortnite and Marvel crossover, it marks the fourth time in as many years Fortnite will crossover with a major comics franchise. While the previous Marvel crossover was a short one-shot, mostly meant to set up backstory for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ appearance as playable characters in Fortnite, this series will tell a complete story on the pages, akin to the franchises crossovers with DC Comics and Batman in 2021. It gives fans of Marvel a new universe for fan favorites to explore, but for fans of Fortnite, it can offer a bigger boon for fans.
A notable facet of the DC comics crossovers, Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point Reilly Brown and Gage, and Batman/Fortnite: Foundation, by Donald Mustard, Gage and DC’s Scott Snyder, was the worldbuilding they did for the Fortnite franchise. It establishes how central functions of the “Battle Royale” mode affect characters, making Batman experience reality-bouncing and memory wipes that give context and depth to one of the most played video games ever. Now that Marvel is getting some time with the franchise, fans could get even more world-building. The series is pitting the heroes against the antagonistic group Imagined Order, giving Gage and Mustard an opportunity to flesh out another aspect of the Fortnite Universe.
With Marvel and Fortnite teaming up again, one thing is assured: Both companies are set to make a lot of money. Unlike their Thor digital one-shot, this series is hitting store shelves, and the two names lined up next to one another are sure to sell. More importantly for fans, though, it’s another chance for fans to explore the lore of a beloved franchise. No matter the motive, Marvel and Fortnite teaming up, especially with Spider-Man, Iron Man and Wolverine joining the fray, sets up a wild ride for fans.
