Somehow, Weasel (Sean Gunn) survived his “death” in The Suicide Squad. In the movie, only four Task Force X members – Bloodsport (Idris Elba), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) – made it through the battle with Starro the Conqueror, but post-credits scenes reveal that two more are still alive. The first scene showed Weasel waking up, while the second set up Peacemaker’s HBO Max show by confirming that ARGUS saved John Cena’s character.
Played by Sean Gunn, the monstrous creature described as a killer of 27 children was thought to be Task Force X’s first causality. Despite being featured in marketing for the film, Weasel (along with most of the characters on his team, was seemingly killed off in the movie’s opening action sequence. In fact, Weasel didn’t even make it to the actual fight. In what was played off as a comedic moment that set the tone for the rest of the battle, Weasel drowned at the very beginning of the mission, all because no one at ARGUS bothered to make sure the creature could swim. It was a discouraging revelation, as indicated by Amanda Waller’s livid reaction to Weasel’s untimely death. However, it’s now known that Weasel yet lives. He awoke on the beach after the conflict had ended, and is now running loose in the jungles of Corto Maltese.
Weasel managing to survive The Suicide Squad can most likely be attributed to Savant (Michael Rooker) falsely declaring him dead. The others took his word for it, but he was apparently premature in his assertion. After dragging him out of the water and checking on him, Savant must have assumed (wrongly) that Weasel had died. Instead, it looks like he just lost consciousness from the water that filled his lungs. Sometime after that, his body forced the water out on its own, enabling him to be the one Task Force X member to survive The Suicide Squad without contributing in any way at all.
As for what purpose The Suicide Squad’s Weasel scene serves, that remains unclear for the time being. It may not have any level of importance to the DCEU’s future, but it’s at least possible that the Weasel reveal was set up for a specific role. Or, it could be that the scene was included just to pave the way for a potential return that might happen at a later date.
Either a way, Weasel can now appear in a later project, whether it be Suicide Squad 3 or Peacemaker. The Suicide Squad notably killed off most of its cast, so the HBO Max series will have a limited scope in terms of which Task Force X members it can use. It can, however, bring in Weasel and place him in the action. If he does come back, more can be revealed about the mysterious nature of this odd creature. Plus, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has hinted at the possibility of Weasel being innocent, which is an idea that should certainly be explored if and when ARGUS ever gets him out of Corto Maltese.
