Here is everything we know so far about Ridley Scott’s historical drama The Last Duel, including release date, cast, story details, and more. The Last Duel was one of many productions impacted by COVID in early 2020, facing filming delays until shooting resumed in September 2020 and finished in October 2020. The film is finally being released in theaters later in 2021.

Though he has directed a few shorts and two episodes of HBO Max’s Raised by Wolves, The Last Duel is Scott’s first feature-length film since 2017’s All the Money in the World. It also marks his return to directing epic period pieces, as one of Ridley Scott‘s most well-known films is 2000’s Gladiator. Instead of ancient Rome, The Last Duel is set in medieval France.

The Last Duel also marks the second screenwriting collaboration between Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who won Oscars for their Good Will Hunting screenplay back in 1997. They share writing credits with Academy-Award nominated writer, Nicole Holofcener. Now that theaters are opening up, let’s take a look at some key details from The Last Duel ahead of its cinematic release.

The Last Duel Release Date

Matt Damon in The Last Duel

The Last Duel was originally scheduled to hit theaters in limited release on December 25, 2020, with a wide release for January 8, 2021. Due to COVID-related delays, the film will now be released on Friday, October 15, 2021. At this time, there are no plans for the film to become available on streaming services.

The Last Duel Cast

The Last Duel boasts a multi-talented main cast. Matt Damon (The Martian, the Jason Bourne series) stars as Jean de Carrouges, a French knight whose wife Marguerite, played by Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, Free Guy), accuses his squire of rape. Adam Driver (Star Wars, Marriage Story) plays the squire, Jacques LeGris, and Ben Affleck (Justice League, Batman V Superman) plays Count Pierre d’Alençon. Supporting players include Harriet Walter (Killing Eve) as Nicole de Buchard and Alex Lawther (The End of the F***ing World) as  King Charles VI, among others.

The Last Duel Story Details

The Last Duel is based on Eric Jager’s book The Last Duel: A Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France, which explores the true story of the last judicial duel in 14th century France. According to the novel, after de Carrouges and LeGris resolve a long-standing feud over land, Marguerite later accuses LeGris of sexually assaulting her and threatening her life. Though LeGris maintains his innocence, de Carrouges challenges him to a duel. If de Carrouges dies, Marguerite will be burned alive for spreading misinformation. By speaking out against her attacker, Marguerite’s life is also put in danger.

The Last Duel Trailer

The Last Duel seems to be following the same storyline as the book, as evident in the trailer which premiered July 2021. Though Marguerite is persecuted for her truth, she stands firm in her testimony in a world where, for women, the truth does not matter to the men who reign. The Last Duel hints at a brutal, dramatic duel, though a compelling, relevant narrative may exist at its heart.
